Finally I Can Understand that Complicated Bowling Thing

This is Len Bari, manager of the Maric Lanes in Astoria, Queens and owner of a 216 average explaining the scoring rules of bowling. At last, someone made a video to explain bowling to the rest of us.

AJ Burnett Has a Nicer Movie Experience Than You

Considering he’s already made $38 million over his career and has another $82.5 million coming his way, I’d imagine that if his brand-new awesome in-home movie theater gets out of date that he’ll be able to upgrade. Featuring an HD projector, a 104″ screen and a super high-end sound system, Burnett has the ultimate in home viewing experience, and according to Electronic House, the third best home movie theater. The overall cost of the theater was over $250,000 so don’t think you’ll easily replicate this in your home, and features a bar and concession stand for everyone to enjoy. I want.

Because an NBA Player Would Ever Drive a Kia

*Oct 30 - 00:03*LeBron James received the first of what will be his many MVP awards today at his Akron high school. Officials from the NBA and Kia were on hand to give the honor to LeBron as well as the keys to an all-new Kia horseless carriage. Considering LeBron has a Maybach, a Mercedes S63, a Bentley, Lambourghinis and a Rolls Royce amongst others in his fleet already, methinks that the Kia isn’t going to get much driving time…

Since the NBA has an average salary of $5 million, I don’t think ANY NBA player is driving around in a Kia, so why even give one away? I hope LeBron gives his to charity or someone who could actually use it, since otherwise it’s a waste.

Are You Ready for Some Football and Hopefully Boobs Popping Out?

As the nascent Lingerie Football League gets ready for the inaugural season starting on September 11, the teams need players who can fill out the rosters, as well as bustiers. To that end, teams have been holding open tryouts across the country and thankfully, the local newspapers have made sure to send out many photographers to the events. There’s probably more photogs at these than the Super Bowl, and fiercer competition too. This definitely looks like a league where showing up for the pre-game warm-ups is mandatory for fans.

Anyhoo, after the jump are some of the highlights from the Seattle Mist, Denver Dream and Dallas Desire tryouts, I for one look forward to these competitions. Also, I’d like to volunteer to be the ball, especially at the bottom of a pile-up. For plenty more from these slide shows, click the links below.

Patriots Draft New Player With Direct Line to the Ever-After

05032009lama

Over the weekend Gillette Stadium, normally home to the New England Patriots held a different kind of visitor, the Dalai Lama who was in town to speak about Tibetan Buddhism, peace and happiness. A rapt crowd of nearly 16,000 enthusiastically greeted the exiled Buddhist leader although the loudest cheers were reserved for when he put on his brand-new red Patriots hat, a gift from Patriots owner Bob Kraft.

No word how the 74 year old fares in a three-point stance but he looks to me like a strong outside rusher.

This Definitely Hurt a Lot

Mike Brown of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks wanted to make sure that the Red Wings’ Jiri Hudler knew Brown was on the ice, and so he delivers a CRUSHING hit at center ice. Of course, since the puck was nowhere near Hudler, Brown went to the penalty box after this one, but I don’t think that was much solace to Hudler who collapses instantly and starts gushing blood. I love the playoffs!

More Atrocities Against Cubs Fans

Denise Richards stopped by Wrigley over the weekend to take part in the traditional singing of Take Me Out to the Ballgame, and her rendition was less than stellar. It’s a shame someone so pretty could release such AWFUL sounds out of her mouth; I’m pretty sure all the animals in the area of Waverly Ave started howling and shrieking because of this. It’s such a shame because after Starship Troopers it looked like her career was unstoppable, I guess being unable to act out of a paper bag makes it harder to succeed; also, she should have gotten naked in Starship Troopers, or at least come back for the third one like Casper Van Dien.

4245907After hearing that atrocity against humanity, it is no wonder that many Cubs fans might wish for death; thankfully, the Bohemian National Cemetary in Chicago’s North Side has the perfect option for a real fan’s final resting place, a replica of the center field wall. Featuring 288 “skyboxes” for urns, loved ones can come visit their passed relatives and view the wall, sitting in 4 real seats from Wrigley that face the wall, or families can play catch on authentic Wrigley sod in front of the wall. Several families have already moved their previously deceased relatives and still-alive fans have also reserved spots in the special wall.

Isn’t being a Cubs fan hard enough, why would you want to take that constant disappointment into the ever-after?

Beam Him Up a Strikeout

SP_303414_BORC_rays_2When current Tampa Bay Ray Joe Nelson was in college his coach suggested he convert from being a shortstop/third baseman to becoming a pitcher; success was slow to come at first, until Nelson developed an effective split-fingered type pitch, inspired by his love of Star Trek. Gripping the ball in a “Vulcan”-style, Nelson has finally found success at the big league level.

Uncomfortable with the traditional grip between his index and middle fingers, Nelson one day moved the ball to between his middle and ring fingers — “I just jammed it in there one day” — and it worked. He began throwing it regularly at the University of San Francisco and never stopped.

Then, of course, he had to decide what to call it. “Old enough” at 34 to have watched Star Trek TV show reruns (and, apparently, lots of other questionable shows) in addition to several of the movies, he figured that was the way to go.

“It was either going to be Nanu Nanu from Mork & Mindy, or the Vulcan,” Nelson said. “And Spock just seemed like a cooler character than Mork did.”

Now That’s a Save

This is quite possible one of the best saves I’ve EVER seen, in any sport. Simeon Varlamov of the Washington Capitals is out of position and has one of the best players in the NHL bearing down on him with the puck; he doesn’t panic though and reaches out with the edge of his stick and somehow, someway makes the save. Amazing. And this photo below captures the moment perfectly, click it to see a slightly larger version, but this save is simply remarkable.

The Slanch Report has started an online petition asking the MLB Network to air the Dock Ellis no-hitter he threw on June 12, 1970 against the San Diego Padres. The moment was a seminal piece of baseball history and is certainly worthy of being rerun.
