The next time Henrik Zetterberg reaches out for a puck in front of the net, it’d be understandable if he’s a little skittish after taking this massive hit from Mattias Ă–hlund last night. I mean, there are crushing big hits, and then there’s this one.

When Appalachian State took on the University of Montana, I didn’t care. When AS’ Matt Cline caught a pass by the sideline I didn’t care. When Montana’s Keith Thompson absolutely explodes into Cline, I cared.
This hit is so hard that MY ribs hurt.
Awesome!
On Monday when the Edmonton Oilers took on the Florida Panthers, late in the second period, Oilers center Robert Nilsson glided up the ice, the only problem was that the Panthers’ Bryan Allen had him dead-to-rights in his sights.
Allen came flying in to check Nilsson somewhere into the next decade except, with a nifty spin-move Nilsson avoided the hit. All that energy had to go somewhere though and unable to stop himself in time, Allen instead slammed into his own teammate, Gregory Campbell, knocking Campbell out cold. Oops!
I’m pretty sure you’re not supposed to take your teammates out of the game. I mean, I’m only a novice at hockey, but that seems counterproductive…
Phil Kessel made his debut last night for the Toronto Maple Leafs after off-season shoulder surgery and a trade from the Bruins. Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Mattias Ohlund brought the welcome wagon in to greet Kessel in the first period with a devastating hit that ultimately sent Kessel to the dressing room to repair a split lip.
Kessel returned though to register 10 shots on goal, although was held without a point. That shouldn’t last long though for the dynamic goal-scorer, despite the fact the Leafs are flat-out miserable.
It’s Curtains for Booth
Have you ever taken a shoulder to the face from a hard-skating very large man that knocks you completely unconscious? Me either. I’d like to keep it that way. David Booth of the Florida Panthers might have been able to say he too had never experienced that, until Saturday that is. Booth has the puck in the middle of the ice and then Flyers captain Mike Richards comes flying in and sends Booth somewhere into the next decade.
Booth lay prone on the ice for several minutes before a stretcher took him off the ice and to the hospital for observation.
The Panthers were advocating a suspension for Richards, but the as of right now the Flyers captain looks like he’ll avoid that fate.
Bergeron Gets “Obliterated”
Marc-Andre Bergeron made his premiere for the Montreal Canadiens last night; it didn’t go perfectly. He took a hooking penalty in his first shift, and then in the second period he gets absolutely CRUSHED into the boards on a massive hit from the Atlanta Thrashers’ Colby Armstrong. Bergeron’s teammates immediately come to his defense swinging, but Bergeron just stands, very unsteadily, nearby watching the scrum trying to clear his head.
When I see hits like this one that Vancouver’s Willie Mitchell levels on Blackhawk’s captain Jonathan Toews I am glad that my mom never would have let me play hockey. It’s a clean hit but it absolutely demolishes Toews who can’t pick up his stick, tries to skate to bench and can’t get a few feet without collapsing. Wow.
I love open ice hits.
