Stop Hitting Yourself

I’m not incredibly well-versed in the world of MMA, but I have a feeling that when you try and bodyslam your opponent and in the process knock yourself unconscious that you are doing it wrong.

Van Damme is on the Warpath

JCVDkamsingMarch 2010 is going to be an awesome time to be in Vegas because that’s when famed actor Jean-Claude van Damme is due to fight Thai Olympic gold-medalist boxer Somluck Kamsing in a Muay Thai MMA fight. Kamsing confirmed the fight will be taking place, it will consist of 5 two-minute rounds.

Because he’s an actor and depends on his face, JCVD requested that the use of elbows be banned for the fight. Kamsing told Siamsport that JCVD didn’t want to get his face cut or bruised.

Of course, prior to being a woldwide “acting” sensation, JCVD was highly trained in martial arts. And of course, he won the tournament in Bloodsport despite being blinded. So, watch out Kamsing!

I’m booking my travel plans NOW!

Don’t Mess With James Johnson

56858961

James Johnson is now one of my favorite NBA players. Drafted #16 overall in this year’s draft, the sophomore from Wake Forest checks in at 6’8″ 235 pounds, making him quite the sturdy power forward. What makes him so exciting to me though starts with this video of him break-dancing while at the rookie photo shoot.

Pretty nice, nothing extraordinary but still dope. Then I found out that Johnson is from Wyoming and I’m more intrigued. Next I learn that he is one of 9 children, that his father Willie is a 6th-degree black belt who used to win karate tournaments under the nom de guerre Tuqik (pronounced Too-Quick). Pretty awesome! But wait, there’s more! Of the 9 children in the family 8 of them are black-belts (including James), with the sole exception his 10 year-old sister Kiandra who is merely a blue belt. Slacker. Add in that James’ mother, Vi, began street fighting as a leader of the Krook City Bloods before switching to tournament fighting, going as Vicious and winning 5 national titles and you have the makings of a totally bad-ass and fun family.

James doesn’t just do all his bruising on the basketball court though, he has a 20-0 record as a kickboxer where his fighting nickname is  “Little Ali” and when he was 18 he fought 31 year old Damond Clark in a MMA fight. That contest lasted all of 90 seconds with Johnson CRUSHING Clark.

Fellow Wake Forest alum and New Orleans Hornets superstar Chris Paul was giving Johnson some ribbing for his fighting telling him,

“I keep hearing about your fighting, but you’re way too big to be a fighter.” Johnson told Paul to stand still directly in front of him, and said, “I’m not going to kick you; I’m that good.” Then he did a roundhouse kick within inches of Paul’s face, causing Paul to step back and say, “O.K., I believe you.”

Basketball may be Johnson’s new career, but “I’m not done fighting,” Johnson said in an interview in 2006, “I think about fighting all the time.”

In the meantime, I’ve found me a new binky. Mental note, keep out of a bench-clearing brawl with the Bulls…

Might as Well JUMP

BJ Penn is a 30 year old MMA fighter who tops out at a mere 5’9″ which makes this stunt of his all the more impressive. Sure, it’s only 3 feet of water, but I sure as hell can’t do this and I doubt any of you can either.

No Way Jose

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Jose Canseco finally made his MMA debut yesterday, entering to the song “Wild Thing” against 7′ 2″ 33o pound Hong Man Choi in Yokohama, Japan. Unlike Canseco’s last foray into the ring — against noted pugilist Danny Bonaduce — where the fight was called a draw, this one ended in a clear decision; 77 seconds into the fight Canseco tapped out.

“That’s a big man,” Canseco said after the fight. “I ran into one of his left jabs and that almost knocked me out. You have no idea how scary it was facing a man that big.” Canseco landed the first punch of the evening an instant into the fight but that was the extent of his inflicted damage, from then on Canseco danced around the ring doing his best to avoid the long reach of Choi. While trying to get away from Choi, Canseco grabbed at his knee at one point and then tried to kick Choi a second later, Choi pushed the former baseball star to the mat and started pummeling his head. Once more left with just the coward’s way out, Canseco tapped out.

“I hurt my knee back home real bad but I didn’t want to disappoint the fans,” Canseco said. “I knew that at some point during the fight my knee was going to give out and once I was down I knew I wasn’t going to get up. He’s just too heavy to move.”

I am incredibly confused though about one thing; when Canseco fought Bonaduce his body was COVERED in tattoos but against Choi, Canseco just had a couple arm tats, what happened to the other ones? For photographic comparisons, take a gander after the jump.

Meet the Next Man to Beat Up Jose Canseco

I guess fighting Danny Bonaduce wasn’t enough of a challenge — even though Bonaduce fought Canseco to a draw when they faced off in January — because Jose Canseco has signed up to fight 7-foot-2 Korean kickboxer Hong Man Choi at the Dream 9 mixed martial arts tournament in Tokyo on May 26th.

Jose is gonna get WRECKED. I know he needs money but there has to be a better way. Hong Man Choi is a GIGANTIC MONSTER of a human being and I’m terrified of him in picture form. Even though Choi doesn’t have a sterling record in the ring, neither does Canseco and Choi is definitely going to destroy him.

Does Vegas take bets on whether or not a fighter will die in the ring? Does it make me a bad person for even asking?
The fight will be on PPV, I need to scrape up the cash for it immediately.

I Think the Fight Was Supposed to Go Longer

If I had to pick an awesome martial arts form to be a master of, I would choose Capoeira because A) it’s bad-ass and B) I really liked the movie “Only the Strong.” Here is Marcus “Lelo” Aurelio of AXE Capoeira Vancouver taking on Keegan ” The Marshall” Marshall in Vancouver on April 4th and knocking him the fuck out. Awesome

Did You Learn That He Hits Hard?

Ever wanted to know what it’d be like to fight a professional MMA fighter? Yeah, me either because I don’t like being hit, but this guy did and set up a brief sparring session with Mike “Bonesaw” Hyman. They set up some ground rules; Mike would “take it easy” and no hits to the face. That doesn’t stop the pudgy normal guy from getting stomped on, even with Bonesaw taking it really really easy on him.

You know what I like best about this clip from a MMA fight, it’s that no one wins.

ESPN Gets MMA Fighter Busted

monsonanarchyTurns out that a ESPN photo feature can land you in big trouble with the law if you aren’t careful. That’s a lesson mixed-martial arts fighter Jeff Monson is learning the hard way. In a photograph for ESPN the Magazine’s December issue Monson is pictured spray-painting an anarchist symbol on the Washington state Capitol. On Wednesday a warrant was sworn out for Monson, charging him with first-degree malicious mischief, a Class B felony carrying a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine. Reportedly, the cost to clean up the graffiti was $19,000.

The case doesn’t look great for Monson, as he is very clearly holding a spray-can and even has some of the red paint on his fingers in the photo. As well, the caption for the photo was very ambigious, “On a recent night in Olympia, Monson suddenly pulled out a spray can and tagged the state capitol.”

Police have been actively searching for the people who have spray-painted various graffiti on the Capitol since late November. A State Patrol and Olympia police detective noticed Monson in some surveillance footage, but it wasn’t until ESPN published this photo that they were able to confirm it. The other graffiti on the Capitol building included other anarchy symbols, a peace sign and phrases like “No War” and “No Poverty,” pretty subversive stuff!

Monson, who is the World Grappling Champion and whose fighting nickname is “The Snowman” took responsibility for the graffiti but insisted that it has a purpose, to protest the Iraq war and the economic inequality.

“Every great movement in the United States from civil rights, women’s rights, the labor movement, has been the result of people standing up and breaking the law, refusing to stand at the back of the bus, refusing the stand aside when the government asks you to get off their property,” Monson said. “And now, these people are seen as pioneers. But at the time, they were criminals, they were literally criminals. I’m not here to advocate for myself, at some point you have to stand up.”

MMA Knows How Spark Interest, Nudity!

Mixed-Martial Arts is still trying to gain a mainstream audience and of course, one of their major female “stars” is Gina Carano, who is better known to me for being Crush on American Gladiators. Carano faced off in an EliteXC fight last night against Kelly Kobold and “bashed her face in” en route to another victory, making her record a solid 7-0. Before the match though there was some excitement at the weigh-in with Carano initially struggling to come in at weight. If Carano weighed in more than her expected 141 lbs she would have had to forfeit part of the prize purse. So, with some extra coin on the line Carano was forced towards more drastic measures, stripping down completely nude to make weight. At first weigh-in she was 142.275 pounds, then she stripped down and came in at 142.5, in her third and final possible weigh-in she somehow managed to then lose another 1.5 pounds coming in at 141 even. The next fight Carano will be involved in will involve her versus a Cyborg, Cris Cyborg to be specific. If human/cyborg matches can’t strike the interest of the public than nothing ever will. Meanwhile join us below seeing Gina strip down and be covered with towels from rando dudes, FUN!
