Marion Jones Wants to Make a Comeback With the WNBA

For those of you of you out there who were looking for more evidence that the WNBA is a joke here comes another news morsel to throw on the fire; Marion Jones, the former track star who later admitted to steroid use and forfeited her gold medals is trying to make a comeback with the San Antonio Silver Stars.

In college, Jones started on the North Carolina team, although that was back in 1994. Now 34-years-old and 15 years (and one 6-month prison sentence) off competitive games, an NBA official recently approached Jones to gauge her interest.

“I thought it would be an interesting journey if I decided to do this,” Jones said. “It would give me an opportunity to share my message to young people on a bigger platform; it would give me an opportunity to get a second chance.”

Jones’ plan is to play some in Europe this winter and try for the WNBA when the summer season starts.

This makes perfect sense to me, I mean, when you have the opportunity to recruit someone who hasn’t played at a high level for 15 years and is coming off a prison sentence for steroids, you HAVE to take it right? I know the quality of the WNBA sucks, but if someone who can literally go from having not played, to prison and then to the league there HAS to be a problem.

Which is Smarter, Bronson Arroyo or a Pile of Rocks?

BA_cr_10_8Bronson Arroyo has never been the brightest bulb. Hell, even in baseball which is populated with plenty of dim bulbs, Bronson’s burns among the dullest.

For instance, last week he said that he’s probably on the 2003 list of positive tests for his many supplements, but he hasn’t changed his practices at all. MLB has told all the players that before they take ANYTHING, even over-the-counter stuff that they should check with MLB first to make sure that it is allowed. Seems reasonable, after all, something you bought at GNC is not worth getting suspended over, or having your public image marred. Unless you’re Bronson and your public image already sucks.

“I have a lot of guys in [the locker room] who think I’m out of [my] mind because I’m taking a lot of things not on the [MLB-approved] list,” Arroyo said, “I take 10 to 12 different things a day, and on the days I pitch, there’s four more things. There’s a caffeine drink I take from a company that [former Boston Red Sox teammate] Curt Schilling introduced me to in ’05. I take some Korean ginseng and a few other proteins out there that are not certified. But I haven’t failed any tests, so I figured I’m good.”

Great! And going back to 2003 when he was taking andro amongst other supplements, Bronson had these choice words to say, “Man, I didn’t think twice about it. I took androstenedione the same way I took my multivitamins. I didn’t really know if this was a genius move by Mark McGwire to cover up the real [stuff] he was taking, but it made me feel unbelievable. I felt like a monster.”

Don’t worry, he’s not done, Bronson also gave the USA Today this great quote regarding the potential health risks from the supplements and vitamins and such:

“It might be dangerous,” he said, according to the report, “but so is drinking and driving. And how many of us do it at least once a year? Pretty much everybody.”

Yeah, not everybody. Some people try and act responsibly and make good decisions. But obviously Bronson wouldn’t know ANYTHING about that. This is the man who thought cornrows would be a good look for him…

F#$K F#$K F#$K F#$K F#$K F#$K

boston_red_sox_mnv_01The NY Times (part owner of the Red Sox) are reporting that both Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz were on the list of players who tested positive in 2003.

Fuck.

Fuck.

False positive? False hope? I still love Ortiz, but if this is true…sigh…I don’t even know. Ugh.

No name surprises me, but some can still make me sad.

Pujols Puts His Money Where His Mouth is

albert-pujolsDuring the home run bonanzas of the steroid days, then-SI writer Rick Reilly challenged Sammy Sosa to take a piss test to prove he didn’t use steroids. Despite being a douche of the umpteenth degree, Reilly has been proven right. Now, while putting up one of the best first-halves in the history of the game, Albert Pujols is trying to be the hero that baseball needs, the one that everyone thought Alex Rodriguez was, until he proved to have been a steroids user too.

“I can understand people being disappointed with A-Rod and Manny,” Pujols says, “But just because Manny made a mistake, now I have to pay? Just because A-Rod made a mistake, now I have to pay? Oh, guilt by association? That’s wrong.”

“For people to be suspicious of me because of the year I’m having and for people to say I just haven’t been caught, that makes me angry and disappointed.

“I would never do any of that crap. You think I’m going to ruin my relationship with God just because I want to get better in this game? You think I’m going to ruin everything because of steroids?”

Already tested he says 6 times, Pujols says that if that isn’t enough, he’s willing to be tested EVERY DAY, and if he is caught using anything banned, he’ll repay to his employers, the St. Louis Cardinals every cent they’ve paid him.

“Come test me every day if you want. Everything I ever made in this game I would give back to the Cardinals if I got caught,” he told reporters.

In this day and age when the fans look at all the players as tainted, I desperately hope that Pujols is the real deal. I don’t care that much about steroids, if everyone was doing them, so be it, it’s unfortunate for the ones who weren’t, but they weren’t complaining when their salaries were rising thanks to the steroids users. However, I want Pujols to be clean.

Albert Pujols is simply too damn good at baseball. If he is using steroids it might break my heart. I want to believe that the things I see him do are legit, I want to believe that a human being is capable of being as incredible as he is; if he were to test positive I don’t know what I’d do.

At this point, no one would surprise me, but Pujols would disappoint me. I hope these statements of his are true, that he is clean and that the evidence will back it up. Baseball needs him. I need him. And at least one of my fantasy teams needs him too.

Another One Comes to Light

Ho-hum, another name from the 104 players who tested positive for steroids in 2003, ladies and gentleman, prepare your shocked faces, it’s Sammy Sosa. No one was clean, no one is that surprised. In the end all the players who should will get in the Hall of Fame and all of them should have steroids prominently mentioned on their plaques.

Subtle Guys…

mr_bel10 BRUSSELS (AP) – The Belgian bodybuilding championship has been canceled after doping officials showed up and all the competitors fled. A doping official says bodybuilders just grabbed their gear and ran off when he came into the room.

“I have never seen anything like it and hope never to see anything like it again,” doping official Hans Cooman said Monday.

Twenty bodybuilders were entered in the weekend competition.

Cooman says the sport has a history of doping “and this incident didn’t do its reputation any good.”

During testing of bodybuilding events last year, doping authorities of northern Belgium’s Flanders region found that three-quarters of the competitors tested positive.
