Marion Jones Wants to Make a Comeback With the WNBA

For those of you of you out there who were looking for more evidence that the WNBA is a joke here comes another news morsel to throw on the fire; Marion Jones, the former track star who later admitted to steroid use and forfeited her gold medals is trying to make a comeback with the San Antonio Silver Stars.

In college, Jones started on the North Carolina team, although that was back in 1994. Now 34-years-old and 15 years (and one 6-month prison sentence) off competitive games, an NBA official recently approached Jones to gauge her interest.

“I thought it would be an interesting journey if I decided to do this,” Jones said. “It would give me an opportunity to share my message to young people on a bigger platform; it would give me an opportunity to get a second chance.”

Jones’ plan is to play some in Europe this winter and try for the WNBA when the summer season starts.

This makes perfect sense to me, I mean, when you have the opportunity to recruit someone who hasn’t played at a high level for 15 years and is coming off a prison sentence for steroids, you HAVE to take it right? I know the quality of the WNBA sucks, but if someone who can literally go from having not played, to prison and then to the league there HAS to be a problem.

Which is Smarter, Bronson Arroyo or a Pile of Rocks?

BA_cr_10_8Bronson Arroyo has never been the brightest bulb. Hell, even in baseball which is populated with plenty of dim bulbs, Bronson’s burns among the dullest.

For instance, last week he said that he’s probably on the 2003 list of positive tests for his many supplements, but he hasn’t changed his practices at all. MLB has told all the players that before they take ANYTHING, even over-the-counter stuff that they should check with MLB first to make sure that it is allowed. Seems reasonable, after all, something you bought at GNC is not worth getting suspended over, or having your public image marred. Unless you’re Bronson and your public image already sucks.

“I have a lot of guys in [the locker room] who think I’m out of [my] mind because I’m taking a lot of things not on the [MLB-approved] list,” Arroyo said, “I take 10 to 12 different things a day, and on the days I pitch, there’s four more things. There’s a caffeine drink I take from a company that [former Boston Red Sox teammate] Curt Schilling introduced me to in ’05. I take some Korean ginseng and a few other proteins out there that are not certified. But I haven’t failed any tests, so I figured I’m good.”

Great! And going back to 2003 when he was taking andro amongst other supplements, Bronson had these choice words to say, “Man, I didn’t think twice about it. I took androstenedione the same way I took my multivitamins. I didn’t really know if this was a genius move by Mark McGwire to cover up the real [stuff] he was taking, but it made me feel unbelievable. I felt like a monster.”

Don’t worry, he’s not done, Bronson also gave the USA Today this great quote regarding the potential health risks from the supplements and vitamins and such:

“It might be dangerous,” he said, according to the report, “but so is drinking and driving. And how many of us do it at least once a year? Pretty much everybody.”

Yeah, not everybody. Some people try and act responsibly and make good decisions. But obviously Bronson wouldn’t know ANYTHING about that. This is the man who thought cornrows would be a good look for him…

F#$K F#$K F#$K F#$K F#$K F#$K

boston_red_sox_mnv_01The NY Times (part owner of the Red Sox) are reporting that both Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz were on the list of players who tested positive in 2003.

Fuck.

Fuck.

False positive? False hope? I still love Ortiz, but if this is true…sigh…I don’t even know. Ugh.

No name surprises me, but some can still make me sad.

Pujols Puts His Money Where His Mouth is

albert-pujolsDuring the home run bonanzas of the steroid days, then-SI writer Rick Reilly challenged Sammy Sosa to take a piss test to prove he didn’t use steroids. Despite being a douche of the umpteenth degree, Reilly has been proven right. Now, while putting up one of the best first-halves in the history of the game, Albert Pujols is trying to be the hero that baseball needs, the one that everyone thought Alex Rodriguez was, until he proved to have been a steroids user too.

“I can understand people being disappointed with A-Rod and Manny,” Pujols says, “But just because Manny made a mistake, now I have to pay? Just because A-Rod made a mistake, now I have to pay? Oh, guilt by association? That’s wrong.”

“For people to be suspicious of me because of the year I’m having and for people to say I just haven’t been caught, that makes me angry and disappointed.

“I would never do any of that crap. You think I’m going to ruin my relationship with God just because I want to get better in this game? You think I’m going to ruin everything because of steroids?”

Already tested he says 6 times, Pujols says that if that isn’t enough, he’s willing to be tested EVERY DAY, and if he is caught using anything banned, he’ll repay to his employers, the St. Louis Cardinals every cent they’ve paid him.

“Come test me every day if you want. Everything I ever made in this game I would give back to the Cardinals if I got caught,” he told reporters.

In this day and age when the fans look at all the players as tainted, I desperately hope that Pujols is the real deal. I don’t care that much about steroids, if everyone was doing them, so be it, it’s unfortunate for the ones who weren’t, but they weren’t complaining when their salaries were rising thanks to the steroids users. However, I want Pujols to be clean.

Albert Pujols is simply too damn good at baseball. If he is using steroids it might break my heart. I want to believe that the things I see him do are legit, I want to believe that a human being is capable of being as incredible as he is; if he were to test positive I don’t know what I’d do.

At this point, no one would surprise me, but Pujols would disappoint me. I hope these statements of his are true, that he is clean and that the evidence will back it up. Baseball needs him. I need him. And at least one of my fantasy teams needs him too.

Another One Comes to Light

Ho-hum, another name from the 104 players who tested positive for steroids in 2003, ladies and gentleman, prepare your shocked faces, it’s Sammy Sosa. No one was clean, no one is that surprised. In the end all the players who should will get in the Hall of Fame and all of them should have steroids prominently mentioned on their plaques.

Subtle Guys…

mr_bel10 BRUSSELS (AP) – The Belgian bodybuilding championship has been canceled after doping officials showed up and all the competitors fled. A doping official says bodybuilders just grabbed their gear and ran off when he came into the room.

“I have never seen anything like it and hope never to see anything like it again,” doping official Hans Cooman said Monday.

Twenty bodybuilders were entered in the weekend competition.

Cooman says the sport has a history of doping “and this incident didn’t do its reputation any good.”

During testing of bodybuilding events last year, doping authorities of northern Belgium’s Flanders region found that three-quarters of the competitors tested positive.

HOLY F#$K!

Manny Ramirez has been SUSPENDED for 50 games for performance enhancing drugs according to the LA Times.

Ramirez is expected to attribute the test results to medication received from a doctor for a personal medical issue, according to a source familiar with matter but not authorized to speak publicly.

With the suspension taking effect with tonight’s game at Dodger Stadium, Ramirez will not be eligible to return to the team until July 3.

WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW.

The official announcement is supposed to be come later today. Manny has denied ever being linked to any PEDs before and when told that Jose Canseco believed it 90% likely that Manny had previously tested positive replied, “I got no comment, nothing to say about that. What can I say? I don’t even know the guy.”

Rick Reilly Tries to Rewrite History

Rick Reilly wrote an interesting concept article the other day for ESPN where he awards MVP awards to players who were beaten out by steroid users. However, I find that he makes some ridiculous assumptions within his piece.

For example, “here’s yours from 2001, Luis Gonzalez, after you finished behind The Barry Bonds Pharmacy. We won’t even mention the home run title you would’ve won that year.” Now, while there is no tangible evidence that Gonzo used steroids, there was that spike from 31 homers in 2000 and then 2001’s 57, followed by a return to the 28 home run range that he had been in the rest of his career. But sure, we’ll assume that Gonzo did it clean.

Reilly isn’t done with picking and choosing his assumptions though, moving on to awarding Albert Pujols 3 more MVP awards saying:

[Pujols] hit .335 and averaged 41 bombs [from 2002 to 2004] and yet you finished second behind the clearly creaming Bonds in ’02 and ’03 and third behind Bonds and Adrian Beltre in ’04. We’re throwing out Beltre since, while he denies ever using PEDs, he fell off the face of the planet once baseball put in stricter steroid suspensions in 2005. If he wasn’t cheating, I’m the Queen Mother.

So, Beltre is suspect despite insisting he never used steroids and had his best year in a contract push, so immediately Reilly assumes that Beltre is guilty. Sure, that’s some sound logic.

This is what I hate about the Steroids Era, everyone is suspect, but then reporters will pick and choose who they think WASN’T using. Sure, you’ll say Luis Gonzalez is clean because he’s a nice guy, ignoring that he produced a stat-line completely out of line with any of his other career numbers. Sure, Reilly will accuse Beltre who hasn’t been listed in any steroids talk because he’s a sourpuss and not fun for reporters to talk to, but ignore a player like Ivan Rodriguez who played with all the other Rangers users, noticeably shrank in size and production and jobbed Pedro of the ’99 MVP. But oops, there I am making an assumption!

Here’s the deal, people won awards by cheating, people played in the big leagues or stayed in the big leagues through cheating, and the reason it happened was that everyone was getting paid. Reporters didn’t write the stories because interest in baseball was high and newspapers need readers. Owners didn’t press because fans were in the seats and buying foam fingers. The players didn’t care because everyone’s salaries were rising rising rising.

Now, an entire era is tainted, a whole slew of players will forever be in doubt unless there is some way to retroactively test everyone. So it goes. That unfortunately is the way it is. The only thing to do is to accept it, ensure that there is nothing going on anymore and the drugs can’t still be used. However, we can’t just pick and choose anecdotal evidence and decide who did and didn’t, it’s irresponsible, it’s unfair and it’s wrong.

Reilly should know better, I know he only has to write like 50 words but c’mon, you can do better.

Yeah, That’s Not a “No”

57208340OG_D035636017

Call me crazy, but if there is lots anecdotal evidence that you did steroids, you’ve seen a precipitous drop in your production and right now you’re looking for a job, when asked if you might also be on the list of 104 players who tested positive, this might not be the best response: “Only God knows.” Of course, I’m not Pudge Rodriguez, but to me, YOU should know if you tested positive because YOU should know whether or not you took steroids. Saying “Only God knows,” to me says, “Yes, I did lots of steroids, I just don’t know if on that one day I was tested they were present in my body.” Pudge, you did steroids, just admit it.

I like Pudge, mostly, until I remember how he stole the MVP from Pedro in 1999, then I get super bitter and angry that Pudge did steroids and robbed Pedey.

Selig Contemplates Punishing A-Rod Retroactively

Far be it from me to actually accuse Bud Selig of doing something wrong, but when I read things like this from ESPN, I start thinking that Bud isn’t the wisest wizard…

Commissioner Bud Selig is considering his options. While Rodriguez can’t be disciplined for testing positive, it’s possible baseball could try to punish him for acknowledging steroid use from 2001-2003.

Selig told USA Today on Wednesday afternoon that he is “just heartsick” about Rodriguez’s admission and would not rule out punishing him or adjusting baseball’s record book. Selig told USA Today he “had put a bulletin out” about the illegality of steroid use in 1997, even though MLB had no drug testing at that time.

“It was against the law, so I would have to think about that,” Selig told USA Today when asked about possible action against Rodriguez. “It’s very hard. I’ve got to think about all that kind of stuff.”

Sure, it was against the law, but until MLB starts suspending players for their DUIs or hitting their wives or other crimes, you can’t just pick and choose which laws are suspension-worthy offenses. But it’s nice that Bud is “heartsick,” not enough to have done anything about the rampant steroids problems in the 90s when he could have avoided incidents like this, but still, it’s good to know he at least has a heart. I always just assumed there was an empty black hole in the middle of his chest.

While I have been incredibly impressed with the manner in which the MLB network has approached the A-Rod news, MLB itself has been woefully inept in handling this situation. Bud Selig has presided over a period of baseball with RAMPANT cheating and did nothing to stop it, while in the process increasing baseball’s revenues and lining his own pockets with an exorbitant salary. Just as A-Rod would never have come forward and admitted his transgressions if the SI story never existed, Bud would happily just ignore everything that happened under his reign with steroids, except Congress and the newspapers love to keep bringing it up. Unfortunately for Bud, now the greatest home run hitter of all-time, one of the greatest pitchers of all-time and the best current player in baseball are all associated with steroids and cheating and all of it happened under his watch. But sure, let’s start punishing players arbitrarily now, particularly for testing positive on a test that was collectively bargained to be non-punitive. Good luck with that.

WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW

According to 4 independent sources, Sports Illustrated is reporting that, in 2003, prior to winning the first of his 3 MVP awards and hitting 47 home runs, Alex Rodriguez tested positive for two different steroids. A-Rod was one of the 104 players who tested positive during that first round of testing, thus leading to the league’s current random drug testing process. Reportedly, Gene Orza, COO of the Players Association who is already in trouble for tipping a player off to an upcoming drug test also tipped A-Rod off to a test in 2004. The test results revealed that A-Rod had testosterone and Primobolan–a steroid that helps maintain lean muscle without adding too much bulk–in his system. Also Primobolan is preferred by many athletes because it doesn’t remain in the system as long as the Deca-Durabolin previously favored by athletes such as Jose Canseco.

WOW

WOW

WOW

WOW

I can’t decide if this is bigger than Bonds or Clemens, but it certainly ain’t good for baseball, A-Rod or the Yankees. Methinks that the best individual player in the game ever having his name involved in steroids, in any manner is damning and damaging. It’s not as though A-Rod has signed the two biggest contracts in the history of sports, or that he has millions of dollars in endorsement deals supposed to come his way. Or that he was supposed to be the savior of baseball’s home run record after Bonds tainted it up with his backne and butt needles. This is going to be a SHIT-STORM if it is true, and I don’t see why SI would have 4 independent sources that are lying to them. What’s worse, is that MLB knew that A-Rod had tested dirty and have been still holding him up as a beacon of purity. This is going to get ugly.

Also, this makes me happy because, you know, fuck A-Rod.
