The next time Henrik Zetterberg reaches out for a puck in front of the net, it’d be understandable if he’s a little skittish after taking this massive hit from Mattias Öhlund last night. I mean, there are crushing big hits, and then there’s this one.

Attending the Golden Puck Awards in Slovakia, newly-minted Chicago Blackhawk, Marian Hossa, was in attendance to receive the award for best forward. Along with his trophy, Hossa — who left the Pittsburgh Penguins after last year’s Stanley Cup loss to try and win one with Detroit instead (this year’s losers to the Penguins) — was given a goat named Stanley as a joke on his poor decision-making. Since the Slovokian word for goat is “cap”, he won the Stanley Cap! Finally!
You did it Marian!
The NHL Playoffs Are Nearly Over
It’s crazy, it seems like the hockey playoffs just began yesterday. No, I kid, they playoffs in hockey take FOREVER, did you remember that the playoffs began on APRIL 15th!!!! It’ll only be 58 days from start to finish when the puck drops tomorrow for game 7 between the Penguins and Red Wings. 58 days! That seems like a lot. I thought hockey players were tough, they can’t play back to back games or something?
Just to get you in the mood for tomorrow’s final game, here is a delightful flash “game” brought to you by the Detroit Free-Press who have been less than pleased by the way refs call penalties on anyone hitting Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby. Click the picture to get taken to the game. Enjoy!
No Puck For You
Darren Helm ultimately scored the winning goal in overtime to help the Detroit Red Wings return to the Stanley Cup finals against their opponent last year, the Pittsburgh Penguins. Before that, he singlehandedly made the Blackhawks look silly by skating around and through their defense holding onto the puck for way too long in their zone, it’s a pretty impressive game of keep away.
This Definitely Hurt a Lot
Mike Brown of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks wanted to make sure that the Red Wings’ Jiri Hudler knew Brown was on the ice, and so he delivers a CRUSHING hit at center ice. Of course, since the puck was nowhere near Hudler, Brown went to the penalty box after this one, but I don’t think that was much solace to Hudler who collapses instantly and starts gushing blood. I love the playoffs!
With the NHL playoffs comes a renewed energy from the players, the intensity gets ramped up and bodies start flying. Like in this hit where Brad Stuart of the Red Wings flat out CRUSHES Columbus’ RJ Umberger in a devastating hit. Watch how Umberger can’t even stand up and tries to scoot out of the way of the play. Ouch.
Zamboni Down!
As Chicago gears up for the upcoming Blackhawks/Red Wings outdoor game at Wrigley Field, all the necessary preparations are being made. For instance, what’s a hockey game without a zamboni? Of course, this being Chicago and Wrigley Field, nothing comes easy. I’d be concerned about the Blackhawks if I were one of their fans after seeing this video. The Cubs have gone 100 years sans championship, the Blackhawks have already gone since 1961 since winning one, I’d be staying away from EVERYTHING Cubs. At least the White Sox have won recently…
