Certainly not as cool as Nicklas Lindberg’s shootout goal, here is Mike Ribeiro from the Dallas Stars making Coloardo Avalanche goalie Peter Budaj look silly as he skates in backwards and then flicks the puck into the net. You know, when the NHL made the move to shootouts I wasn’t sure I was into it, but damn if it don’t allow some pretty sweet moves for the players to show off.

OK, That’s Pretty Awesome
They must spend plenty of extra time working on penalty shots in Sweden; we already saw Linus Omark take it to the house with a super pretty goal but this video tops it. Here is Nicklas Lindberg from the Port Huron Icehawks just flat out baffling Kalamazoo goalie Joel Martin during a shootout. This is one of the nicest hockey goals I have ever seen, and I doubt you’ll see anything else this good, probably ever.

Now That’s an Impressive Goal
Here is Grafite, a player on Vfl Wolfsburg working awfully hard to score, he does, and damn if it ain’t pretty.

Soccer is really nice when played well. For example, here is Arsenal’s Eduardo banging one home in a most pretty manner. Lovely.
You cannot stop Alexander Ovechkin. You cannot hope to contain Alexander Ovechkin. You can only watch and marvel at everything he can do, because seemingly there isn’t anything on the ice he CANNOT. For instance, here he is scoring a goal after tripping and sliding on his butt, because, you know, that’s easy…
That young man has some game.
Happy Feet Make Happy Goals
At first, this just looks like another goal, nothing particularly interesting or special about it, that is until I watched it in slow motion. Yoanne Gorcuff makes a couple sick moves before burying this ball in the back of the net. Touché monsieur Gorcuff, touché.
Are You Kidding Me!?!
Canadian teenager John Tavares, who terrifyingly was born in 1990, is a member of the Canadian Junior Hockey team currently playing in the World Junior Hockey tournament in Ottawa and is widely anticipated to be the first pick in this year’s NHL draft. He also scored an astoundingly incredible goal during Canada’s first game of the tournament. Make sure you see the high quality version because this will blow you away.
Seriously, that is absolutely AWESOME! It reminds me of the moves from D2 of Dwayne Robertson, played by Ty O’Neal, who interestingly is now a professional rodeo cowboy.
More Hockey Highlights!
One of my friends, who is basically Canadian but loves the Bruins, and is one of the last people I know who was still interested in hockey turned to me yesterday and said, “Why did no one tell me the Bruins were kicking so much ass this year.” The 2008-9 NHL season folks!
Thanks to the endless publicity machine that is the NHL, somehow, no one knows that thus far the hockey season has actually been pretty good.
And among the class of the league, my Bruins who really are kicking some serious ass. Take Blake Wheeler in yesterday’s game against the St. Louis Blues. My man Wheeler is so good he takes on 5 Blues and walks away with a damn pretty goal. Don’t believe me? I have video proof!
Oh yeah, and the Bruins were playing short-handed at the time.
So David Beckham’s US soccer career has not gone as swimmingly as he (or MLS and the LA Galaxy) had hoped, there was the ankle injury that made him miss much of last season and so far this year he has been decent but not excellent. However, for one moment in last night’s game against the KC Wizards, Beckham showed some of the deft touch that made him such a worldwide phenomenon when he lifted a ball 70 yards and over the goalkeepers head for a goal.
Awesome! It turns out that this isn’t the first time he’s done this in high-level game, he apparently did it as well when he was a fresh faced teenager for Manchester United too.
Dope.
A very grateful h/t to Unprofessional Foul
The Montreal Toronto Maple Leafs, (this sport is stupid excepting the playoff beards and the fighting) besides having a very imposing name, have been one of the most storied franchises in hockey. Right now they are struggling to make the playoffs and lost last night in an important game against the Boston Bruins where the 8th playoff spot was on the line. The Maple Leafs lost 6-2. Recently named Player of the Week goalie Vesa Toskala was taken out of the game with 3 minutes remaining and the Leafs down by 3. To further illustrate how efficient his game has been recently, and why he definitely deserved the Player of the Week award, check out this goal he allowed the other night against the New York Islanders.
That was only from 197 feet away, I can see how he might have found that so difficult. No wonder no one watches anymore.
