This Game Can Be Awfully Cool

If you are a Tampa Bay Lightning fan, Sunday’s game against the Blackhawks was not one of your favorites. However, if you like hockey, or even if you just like to see some incredible things, the two teams combined on 2 amazing plays in the final minutes of the 2nd period and in the 3rd.

First, Marian Hossa shows off his hand-eye coordination when he grabs a loose puck out of the air and drops it towards his stick. Without waiting for it to hit the ice, he knocks it out of the air into the net, making it 4-0 in favor of Chicago.

Then, as the final seconds of the game are counting down Lightning goaltender Antero Niittymaki makes a truly FANTASTIC save; despite being down 4-0 and the game already lost, Niittymaki doesn’t give up and makes the phenomenal play.

Awesome! Cool!

Like Running Straight Into a Brick Wall

When I see hits like this one that Vancouver’s Willie Mitchell levels on Blackhawk’s captain Jonathan Toews I am glad that my mom never would have let me play hockey. It’s a clean hit but it absolutely demolishes Toews who can’t pick up his stick, tries to skate to bench and can’t get a few feet without collapsing. Wow.

I love open ice hits.

See Hockey, Win A Million Bucks

In Chicago last night, fans went home saddened by the Blackhawks’ 4-1 loss to the Minnesota Wild, except for one fan. An unidentified fan, through an Illinois lottery promotion walked away from the game with $1 million after the Wild’s Martin Havlat scored exactly at the 10 minute mark of the second period. While the other Chicagoans went home despondent, the man, who requested his name be withheld was full of happiness and also looked a little stunned after the game when he got the chance to meet Havlat.

“At least something good came out of the game,” Havlat told the winner.

During the postgame press conference when the ‘Hawks’ coach Joel Quenneville was informed about the lucky fan he had this understated statement. “He did? Good for him.”

Zamboni Down!

As Chicago gears up for the upcoming Blackhawks/Red Wings outdoor game at Wrigley Field, all the necessary preparations are being made. For instance, what’s a hockey game without a zamboni? Of course, this being Chicago and Wrigley Field, nothing comes easy. I’d be concerned about the Blackhawks if I were one of their fans after seeing this video. The Cubs have gone 100 years sans championship, the Blackhawks have already gone since 1961 since winning one, I’d be staying away from EVERYTHING Cubs. At least the White Sox have won recently…

The Slanch Report has started an online petition asking the MLB Network to air the Dock Ellis no-hitter he threw on June 12, 1970 against the San Diego Padres. The moment was a seminal piece of baseball history and is certainly worthy of being rerun.

Please join us in this cause and sign the petition below so we can all share in this special and fantastic moment of baseball history. THANKS!
