When A Win Isn’t A Win

Sports can often be subjective, did that receiver push off and interfere with the cornerback, or was the cornerback the interferer? Was that a strike or just off the corner? Was the defender’s feet still moving or did they get the charge? That’s why running is such a nice break sometimes. Races aren’t subjective; there’s a line, people cross it, first one across wins. Not too complicated. So it was with great surprise that I read this story from San Francisco about the Nike Women’s Marathon where NYC school teacher Arien O’Connell ran the fastest time but didn’t win the race. That’s because O’Connell wasn’t registered in the “elite” group of runners who received a 20 minute head start to avoid the jostling of the amateurs.

Meanwhile, the 5th grade teacher, who had never broken 3 hours in 7 previous marathons ran her heart out and finished in 2:55:11. However, when the awards were announced for the winners O’Connell was not among them. “They called out the third-place time and I thought, ‘I was faster than that,’ ” she said. “Then they called out the second-place time and I was faster than that. And then they called out the first-place time (3:06), and I said, ‘Heck, I’m faster than her first-place time, too.’ ”

So O’Connell went over to the scorer’s and asked to see her time, and again, she was faster by nearly 11 minutes. “They were just flabbergasted,” O’Connell said. “I don’t think it ever crossed their minds.”

Nike, the company whose name implies victory and whose slogan is “Just Do It” did the opposite. “At this point,” Nike media relations manager Tanya Lopez said Monday, “we’ve declared our winner.” Continue reading ‘When A Win Isn’t A Win’

Strange Partnerships These Days

FINALLY! The sports partnership we’ve all been waiting on finally has happened. The New York Giants have joined forces with Tiffany’s to offer a range of items as the “New York Giants Super Bowl XLII Collection.” The collection includes:

  • Pendant with blue accent on an 18-inch chain: plated $75, sterling silver $225 or 14k white gold $1,350.
  • Round tag bracelet in sterling silver, $225.
  • Round cuff links in sterling silver, $200.
  • Helmet paperweight in crystal, $175.
  • Football paperweight in crystal, $100.
  • Beer mugs in crystal, set of two, $100.
  • Sterling silver “Return to Tiffany™” round tag pendant on an 18-inch chain, $110.
  • I.D. tag pendant in sterling silver with a coin edge on a 20-inch beaded chain, $275.
  • Set of two crystal tumblers, $60.

Sounds like a MUST-OWN for all true Giants fans. What big blue fan wouldn’t be desperate for a crystal Giants helmet paperweight right?

(Not pictured, the Angel of Death waiting just off frame)

Of course, this isn’t the only strange sports partnership announced in the last few days. The New York Yankees and the Dallas Cowboys, with a side order of Goldman Sachs have announced a partnership to create a new stadium concessions company, Legends Hospitality Management.

The company’s focus will “be on operating catering, concessions, retail merchandising and other facility management enterprises for major sports and entertainment facilities. Legends has been granted the exclusive right to operate concessions, catering and merchandising services at the new, state-of-the-art Yankees and Cowboys stadiums on a multi-year basis. Legends intends to expand beyond these anchor teams to provide its services to professional and college sports teams and other event facilities worldwide.”

This picture below of Jerry Jones and George Steinbrenner shaking hands might be the most disturbing photo in the last decade. I’m almost positive this is a sign of impending apocalypse.

Who Says Buffalo Doesn’t Have Style

I can’t believe that the Buffalo Bills have been having a hard time financially, with high budget sponsors like this, there is no reason why they should even need to consider games in Toronto. Here is Bills cornerback Leodis McKelvin doing a local ad for a sports memorabilia store and the production values alone should be marveled at. I’m fairly certain McKelvin received in the high 7 figures for this ad.

I really REALLY appreciate the t-shirts with each man’s name on it, otherwise I’d be totally bewildered as to which one was Dave and which Adam. Thanks guys!

Nude Tennis Lessons Anyone?

Over the weekend Andy Roddick stepped up and showed just how much he cares about doing charity work. The recently engaged Roddick, (to model Brooklyn Decker, yowzers!) was at Elton John’s Advanta World Team Tennis Smash Hits event to help benefit AIDS research and initially offered a private tennis lesson for the event’s auction. In order to help spark even more bidding, Andy offered to do the coaching shirtless, which as we know is his preferred outfit. Then, to make it all the more interesting Roddick offered to do the lesson completely nude. The bidding went to $15,000.

Who knew Roddick’s raw dick was so valuable.

Lisa Guerrero, who blogged about the event initally poses the most important question, “Wonder what Anna Kournikova could’ve gotten for the same offer?”

1 in 10 Olympians Hurt in Beijing

A recently completed study conducted by the IOC found that 1,055 athletes were treated for various injuries and ailments during the Beijing games. Nearly 100 injuries were related to the head and almost half of all of them were injuries were leg or foot problems, usually thigh or ankle strains. And, in news sure to shock the world,

The sports most dangerous to Olympians’ health were boxing, soccer, handball, field hockey, taekwondo and weightlifting. Each reported injuries to around one in seven athletes.

Four sports reported that none of its athletes lost training or competition time: flatwater canoeing, diving, sailing and synchronized swimming.

You’re telling me that NO one managed to get hurt during synchronized swimming? I am SHOCKED! All the contact, the tackling you’d think more injuries would occur. I’m also thankful that the sailing athletes were able to tough it out and work through their callouses and boat shoe toe injuries.

The Ladies Love Longoria

Sure, Evan Longoria had an errant throw that directly led to the winning run in last night’s ball game–although I firmly believe that Pena should have received the error there, the ball bounced in front of him enough for him to readjust and catch it, he’s the one who should have gotten the error–but he has plenty of exciting other things going on. For example, he reportedly has a hot girlfriend.

Longoria has been spotted at a University of Southern Florida football game with a quite attractive lass. (Video HERE) Some sleuthing by the gents over at Sports by Brooks and they think they’ve identified the mysterious young lady, she’s Jaime Hanna, by day a a dental hygienist, on the weekends, a 2 year veteran of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers cheerleading squad.

Now, I’m not 100% they are the same lady, but hey, cheerleader photos right…

Mr. Met is a Mr. Man!

Deadspin received this video from last night’s debate recaps on Fox News where we finally learn what is inside the head of Mr. Met. Another HEAD! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! This could have been totally traumatic if any kids were watching, but it being Fox News, if kids were watching they are already brain damaged so… ZING!

It’s just so scary to see behind the curtains sometimes.

MIT Sports Will Continue Their Domination

When I think about MIT my mind instantly goes to their powerhouse sports teams that dominate the NCAA every year. I’m pretty sure that their football team has now won like 8 straight BCS championships right? And who could forget the Fightin’ Scientists as they dominate March Madness year after year, running roughshod over the opponents. See, MIT has sports down to a science.

That’s why this news is so welcome. George Steinbrenner, or at least the zombie corpse of George Steinbrenner made a $1 million donation to MIT yesterday for additional construction in their sports facilities.

“It is our honor and privilege to ensure that future athletes, fans, and the entire MIT community will be able to continue to enjoy the Steinbrenner Stadium for generations to come,” George Steinbrenner said in a statement.

The money will be used to help renovate Steinbrenner Stadium, the money for which was donated by George and his sisters in the 70s in honor of their father, a 1927 graduate of the school.

“This [donation] provides us with funding to upgrade our stadium seating, access areas and working press box,” said Julie Soriero, MIT’s director of athletics, “This will vastly improve Steinbrenner Stadium as it currently exists, making it an outstanding venue in which to compete or watch a game. We are appreciative of the continued generosity from the Steinbrenner family.”

As a native Bostonian, I can’t even count how many afternoons have been spent watching the physical marvels of the MIT sports academies ply their trades. Win after win, championship after championship, MIT has been, and should now long remain, UNSTOPPABLE! Thanks George!

Worst Road Game Ever

A second division Peruvian soccer team was returning from their most recent match when they suffered a catastrophic accident. After highway robbers forced the bus driver out of his seat at gunpoint, the brakes stopped working and the bus rolled off a cliff. It ended up falling down a ravine nearly 600 feet! Three players were killed, along with 2 of the owners of the team. Several of the players were also seriously injured in the fall.

The game that they were returning from they lost, 10-0.

Sounds like a great day…

You Lost… I SAID, YOU LOST

Smooke goes for it!

As long-time readers know, I hate college sports, I do however make an exception for the SUNY Maritime Privateers out of Throgs Neck, NY. I EAT, DRINK, LIVE Privateers. But even me, the most rabid SUNY Martitime fan EVER thinks that their last game wasn’t quite fair.

Playing Gallaudet University, SUNY barely eked out a 27-0 victory over the weekend, holding the Gallaudet “offense” to under 200 yards, the first time the Privateers have done so since 2006. QB Michael Smooke smoked the defense throwing for a career high 191 yards with a touchdown adding in another three rushing TDs, while James Spanopolous led the team in rushing with 119 yards in 29 carries.

The key to this game was time of possession, with the Privateers eating up nearly the entire second quarter with only one drive. Gallaudet really only had one drive, in the 4th, where they threatened until the ferocious SUNY D stood up and stripped the QB of the ball. In Gallaudet’s final possession they also tossed up an interception, allowing SUNY the chance to run out the clock en route to SUNY’s first EVER three win season. WE DID IT! HOORAY!

Sure, it was accomplished against a team of players who are deaf, but hey, it still counts. Personally I’m really interested in how Gallaudet runs their team. How does the QB hike the ball? What about defensive adjustments on audibles. I mean, wouldn’t it just make sense to audible constantly at the line if you were the opposing team?

Eh, who cares, MARITIME WON! Who wants to go take out the goalposts with me?!

My Face Hurts

Vitali Klitschko is the new WBC heavyweight champion of the world, but no one really cares because it isn’t the 1960s and boxing no longer matters. On Saturday Klitschko fought Samuel Peter of Nigeria for the title, winning on a TKO in the 9th round. Klitschko may think he’s tough, but he should remember that a fat white guy taught me karate at the YMCA, so he better recognize.

Anyways, if you ever wanted to know what it is like to get punched in the face by a WBC champion, it looks like this:

Ow.

Stephanie Rice: Just Like Us

I must be prescient, I post that picture of Stephanie Rice yesterday and then BAM, today, pictures of her partying out come out. The world must love me. It seems that Stephanie and some friends went to Thailand for a weekend of funtimes and after agreeing to let some rando dude take a photograph of her Rice noticed that he kept snapping photographs for the rest of the evening. Understandably she’s upset because she is 20 years old and wants to be able to just go out and enjoy herself like anyone else her age. I agree, she should be just left alone, with me, on a romantic date where she is wooed. But, since the pictures are out there, I’d be remiss to ignore them. The Daily Telegraph, the newspaper that bought the photos fortunately also provides two other galleries with nearly 100 other Rice photos for our visual appreciation, so there’s that too. Since the Olympics ended Rice has been keeping busy, signing an $800,000 contract with Channel 7, and recently filmed her first segment for Better Homes and Gardens. Now, after having not swum since Beijing she’s been getting back into the pool and starting her training once more. “I set goals for myself in Beijing and some (swimming) times I set I didn’t achieve, so I am looking forward to moving forward and that motivates me. But swimming careers don’t really last a long time. I really want to continue doing the TV stuff when I finish my swimming career.” Sounds like a good plan to me.

Anyhoo, the galleries are here, here and here and feature photos like the ones below. The photos from Thailand in the first gallery aren’t particularly interesting but hey, any Stephanie Rice makes me happy.

Sigh. Swoon.
