Yeah, That’s Not a “Book” Book

sarah2Now I’m a man who enjoys a bit of whimsy mixed in with his days, and I can always appreciate a bit of good humor; however, I’m not so certain that’s what is going on here.

Meet Sarah, a member of the Washington Capitals’ Red Rockers, the on-ice dance and cheerleading team and she really REALLY liked Pirates of the Caribbean based on her answers on her informational page. For instance, when asked her favorite movie, she says “Pirates of the Caribbean,” so using my investigative skills I determine she likes that movie. Further, when asked two desert island questions, both come back to pirates and piracy (because let’s face it, pirates are hot right now; the Urban Pirate look is going to become big, I guarantee it!):

If you are on a deserted island and could have one song play what would it be and why? Any song from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” soundtrack, because I’d obviously be looking for buried treasure if I were on a deserted island…
If you are on a deserted island and can have one person with you of historical or celebrity status dead or alive who would it be and why?
I suppose if I were on a deserted island it would help to have a professional pirate there to help me look for buried treasure. I’d choose Blackbeard.

OK, so, no big deal, she’s just a financial analyst who REALLY likes big budget plot-less marketing movies, nothing too wrong there, maybe it’s a little vapid, but who am I to judge?

Of course, then there is this, when asked her favorite book she replies with “Facebook.” First off, that’s not a book. Second off, I weep for America. Or rather, if I weren’t such a strong-willed masculine piece of manhunk I’d weep; because I am those things instead I eat a hunk of raw meat and put on a muscle tee. But it’s inherently the same concept. Thirdly, there are myriad answers that could be used for that question and she quite simply chose the WORST possible answer. She may have lost the chance to ever sleep with me.

Also, when did hockey ever need cheerleaders?

This Ovechkin Guy is Pretty Good

I don’t know what is going on in the Rangers/Capitals playoff series, the Rangers took a commanding lead early on, but now the Capitals are storming back, thanks in large part to the play of all-world superstar, Alex Ovechkin. I don’t care particularly who wins this series, although if the Rangers do, they then get the chance to be crushed by the Bruins, and I don’t mind that too much…

Anyhoo, here’s Ovechkin doing everything he can to take his team deep into the playoffs. He’s better at hockey than you or I, or pretty much everyone.

The Ivy Leagues Teach You How to Be a Gentleman

Are there better things than a good hockey fight? How about an NHL hockey fight between two Ivy League grapplers?

Here’s Doug Murray and George Parros squaring off against one another during the San Jose Sharks and Anaheim Ducks game. I love it!

I Am Batman, Would You Like to Ride With Batman?

With the NHL playoffs comes a renewed energy from the players, the intensity gets ramped up and bodies start flying. Like in this hit where Brad Stuart of the Red Wings flat out CRUSHES Columbus’ RJ Umberger in a devastating hit. Watch how Umberger can’t even stand up and tries to scoot out of the way of the play. Ouch.

5 Minutes for Being an A-Hole

In the British Columbia Hockey League Doyle Cup Regional Championship game between the Vernon Vipers and the Grande Prairie Storm, Elias Grossman of the Storm decided he’d had enough. With his team down 6-2 and only 26 seconds left in the game, Grossman decided to send a message for the next game. Mostly that he’s an asshole. First he starts a fight with an opposing player, then he mixes it up with the ref, throwing HIM to the ground, then when the ref tries to pull Grossman off the ice, Elias spits in his face. Ta-Da!

Show Me State Says Keep Your Ballots Secret

HKO-U20-RUSSIA/USA HOCKEY TOPIXSt. Louis Blues rookie TJ Oshie has made many fans this season, but one fan may have landed in trouble thanks to a cell-phone photo.

During the mayoral elections for O’Fallon, Missouri, a voter put Oshie’s name on the ballot as a write-in candidate. A waste of a vote perhaps, but not illegal. Unfortunately, the voter then took a photo of the ballot and posted it on the internet, which, since it’s illegal to share the contents of a completed ballot means the voter is in trouble.

“[The voter] violated the law, and I’m going to prosecute,” elections director Rich A. Chrismer told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “They may have thought the photo was cute, but it was very serious.”

“You can’t violate something as sacred as the ballot,” Chrismer said. “People won’t trust going to a polling place if they think somebody is walking around with a camera.”

If convicted the voter could face a year in jail and a US$2,500 fine.

It’s Playoffs BEARD Time!

First off, I love the playoffs beard, I think it’s the best tradition in hockey.

Last night the Bruins started their quest for the Stanley Cup with a thrilling victory over the Montreal Canadiens. Here is Bruins phenom Phil Kessel scoring an empty-netter and then a fun brawl breaking out. Pay close attention though to the fan in the white t-shirt behind the glass; as the fight keeps breaking out, the Canadiens’ Alexei Kovalev’s stick comes through the glass and the fan tries to steal it. The look on Kovalev’s face is priceless. Awesome.

Also, if you are a Bruins fan, you have to love this team. Kessel, Blake Wheeler, and my main man Milan Lucic comprise a core that is dopecity, Chara is the best defenseman in the league right now and Thomas should win the Vezina. Go BRUINS!

You Can’t Do That on Television

Ah, what a show You Can’t Do That on Television was, and it was Canadian, did you know that? It’s true, that’s why Alannis Morrisette was on it. Did you know that too? It’s all true.

Unfortunately for Roger Millions of Rogers Sportsnet, I’m almost positive you can’t say THIS on television, even in Canada.

Zamboni Driving 101

ph2009040904165Watching the Zamboni make its way around the ice, many a fan has dreamed of driving the beautiful contraption. At the Herbert Wells ice rink in College Park, Maryland you can have just that opportunity. Several times a year, for a $90 fee, ($75 if you sign up in advance) you can take a two-night Zamboni training course. There they will teach you the basics of blade changing, tank filling, scraping patterns and the all important vehicle storage. Of course, most people are there just to ride around on the big lumbering machine.

“People are just fascinated by them,” said Russell Barrett, the rink’s head Zamboni wrangler and the night’s instructor. “They line up to watch as we do cuts,” the professional term for the Zam’s periodic solo performances between hockey periods and breaks in the all-skate. “The kids wave. It makes some of the guys nervous to operate it with all the people watching.”

According to Barrett, the most eager participants are young men and dads, although occasionally a woman will come to take the class too. Slow moving machine plus maintaining an ice surface and moving in circles? Sign me up!

Her Bid to Own the Team Will Go On

With George Gillett trying to divest himself of the Montreal Canadiens, currently 10 prospective ownership groups have emerged to take over the team. Among them are Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte, Quebec cable giant Quebecor Media and, of course, star chanteuse Celine Dion. Because if you’re a fan of the Canadiens you definitely want an association with the Titanic. Haven’t Canadiens fans suffered enough?

OK, That’s Pretty Awesome

Certainly not as cool as Nicklas Lindberg’s shootout goal, here is Mike Ribeiro from the Dallas Stars making Coloardo Avalanche goalie Peter Budaj look silly as he skates in backwards and then flicks the puck into the net. You know, when the NHL made the move to shootouts I wasn’t sure I was into it, but damn if it don’t allow some pretty sweet moves for the players to show off.

The Prettiest Goal You’ll Ever See

They must spend plenty of extra time working on penalty shots in Sweden; we already saw Linus Omark take it to the house with a super pretty goal but this video tops it. Here is Nicklas Lindberg from the Port Huron Icehawks just flat out baffling Kalamazoo goalie Joel Martin during a shootout. This is one of the nicest hockey goals I have ever seen, and I doubt you’ll see anything else this good, probably ever.
