The Broncos Lose Their Biggest Fan

Every team has that one special fan that stands in for the larger fan-base, people like the Cowbell Man for the Mets or the Jets’ Fireman Ed; Tim McKernan, the self-named “Barrel Man” of the Denver Broncos was just that kind of fan.

The famous rooter made a $10 bet with his brother in 1977 that he could wear a barrel to the game and get on television. He did, and that launched a 22-year-run where McKernan, a former United Airlines mechanic, showed up at every Broncos home game in his ubiquitous orange barrel, orange cowboy hat and boots and little else. From 1967 to 2008, McKernan missed a total of 4 games, in 2007 the Broncos held a special half-time ceremony where they honored him, presented him a game ball and several other team presents.

Early Saturday morning Tim McKernan passed away of lung failure; he was 69.

The Saints Are Marching (Towards a Perfect Season)

Ultimately, I’m not SHOCKED that the Redskins couldn’t pull it together in order to take down the undefeated Saints yesterday, despite the game being eminently winnable, the Redskins after all have been absolutely pathetic this year. Nothing symbolizes that better than this play; with less than a minute remaining in the first half, Drew Brees throws an interception which is then immediately ripped out of the Redskins’ hands and run back for a touchdown by Saints receiver Robert Meachem.

Not only is this play just awful if you’re a Redskins fan, but look at that stiff-arm Brees throws at the beginning of the play, that’s a defensive end that Brees just pushes to the ground like he was a six-year-old child. Only one word can describe that stiff-arm, the rest of the play, the Redskins season and their racist team name; embarrassing.

Don’t Throw it to STONE HANDS

When you give up 2 draft picks plus two players for one troubled receiver mid-season you are doing so with the intention of getting a big-time player, someone who will make a difference. Or, if you’re the New York Jets you do that trade for Braylon “Stone Hands” Edwards. This is the same Edwards who led the league with 16 dropped passes last year, but sure, he’s probably over that…

Don’t Stop Until You’re in the Endzone

This clip of Pioneer High School’s excellently executed final play of the game is from almost a month ago but I’m willing to wager big bucks that most of you have been remiss in following random high school football games and so this is new to you.

This play gets attempted a lot, but rarely ever works; these guys put it all together.

Tiger’s Indiscretions Affect Us All

Lost among the clamor of the Tiger Woods story is the impact that this is having on the people around him. Won’t anyone think of Tiger’s poor neighbors!?! For instance, Ryan Longwell, the place kicker for the Minnesota Vikings lives in the same gated community as Tiger, they’re neighbors actually and since this story broke the coverage has been invasive even on Longwell’s wife and kids.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Won’t anyone think of the children?

LeBron Can Do Anything

LeBron James is an athletic freak, we can all agree on this; he still insists that he could play NFL football now, much to the chagrin of Saints tight end Jeremy Shockey. During a recent Cavs practice the team lightened things up a bit by playing some casual football on the court. Afterwards, just goofing around LeBron launches the football from the baseline and goes nothing but net. Is there ANYTHING he can’t do on a basketball court?

The Bills Try to Erase Dick Jauron

The Buffalo Bills fired head coach Dick Jauron on November 17, but the week before they took their team photo. Wanting to cleanse themselves of that period, they photoshopped Jauron out of the photo. In order to do so though they had to make some strange moves.

I mean, it’s no big deal, Jauron WAS fired and I can see the team wanting to move on, and presumably most people would never notice this. But I’m on the Internet a lot, and that’s how I came across the bit of detective work done by Josh Fitz, a Buffalo Bills fan and message board poster. Here’s some of his evidence:

1. Xavier Oman (#44) is in the photo. He was waived on 11/11. Jauron wasn’t fired until 11/17. This photo couldn’t have been taken after his firing.
2. Ralph and Brandon seem to be a little off-center. It seems that the logical place for Dick to be standing is right next to Ralph, where the three would be perfectly centered in the photo.
3. Who is in that spot? Jairus Byrd. And he seems larger than normal. In the photo he looks slightly taller than #29 next to him (Drayton Florence). Except Byrd is listed at 5′ 10″ and Florence is 6′ 0″. (That arm just ain’t natural; unless you’re this guy…)
4. Take a look at #29’s right ear. He seems to have some extra pixel’s… either that, or Kawika Mitchell has a seriously weird forearm.

Raiders Fans Want to Be Heard, Make a Billboard

There must be something in the water of rural Pennsylvania that inspires cranky NFL fans to start billboards for their far-off favorite franchises. First it was a Bills fan who, with hundreds of other Bills fans paid for a drive-time billboard imploring the Bills owner to fire Dick Jauron — which obviously was the driving reason for Jauron’s eventual dismissal. Now, 22-year-old Jared Staszewski of Erie, Pennsylvania has gotten together with some fellow Raiders fans online to send a message to the aging Raiders owner and general manager Al Davis.

The group wants Al to step down as GM and for the team to hire a coach who isn’t inept like Tom Cable and isn’t “managed” from the owner’s box.

“We have nothing but respect for Mr. Davis and what he has done for the team over the years,” Staszewski said. “But that effort and our championships are in the past. I have been a loyal fan since 1993 and in those 16 years we (the Raiders) have only had four playoff appearances. We are now on track for our seventh losing season in a row and we believe something has to change,” he said.

“We thought a billboard, posted near the stadium might generate some awareness, create a dialogue among the ‘Raider Faithful’ and perhaps make a difference,” Staszewski said, thus, mesagetoal.com was born.

In a mere 8 weeks, the site has raised nearly $2,000 of the necessary $5,500 needed for the billboard. As well, their over 21,000 people have signed the site’s petition that requests four things:

  1. Please step down as General Manager
  2. Hire a new GM
  3. Hire a Super Bowl caliber coach
  4. Agree to refrain from intervention in personnel or football operational matters

“Some disgruntled fans of other teams have worn brown bags over their heads or staged protests to try to get their message out there,” Staszewski said, “We believe this billboard is a respectful way to give this initiative a voice and to ask Mr. Davis to allow the team to realize its potential.”

Starting yesterday, the billboard is up, a mere half mile from the stadium and Staszewski is hopeful fans will continue supporting his site as they were forced to take a line of credit out to pay for the billboard.

“We believe in the organization and we hope that Mr. Davis might become inspired to ‘do the right thing.’ We believe he, our loyal fan base and the entire Oakland region will all benefit if we are to achieve our goal. We didn’t want to sit back and simply complain about our situation. We want to take steps to do something about it. We can’t make draft picks or coach from the stands. We can, however, bring the issue to light and respectfully request that the organization make some necessary changes which we believe can help the Raiders to fully realize their potential and to once again be considered among the NFL’s elite teams,” Staszewski said.

Jared Allen’s Motor (and Mouth) Doesn’t Stop

I am LOVING the NFL’s recent practice of putting a mic on star players for their games and then releasing it a day or two later. One of the latest to strap it on is the never-shy Minnesota Viking Jared Allen who has been nothing short of DOMINANT all season long. This clip gives a real nice impression of what he’s like on the field. That man does not want to be blocked, he just seems to manhandle whoever is in front of him. That’s quite a load.

Rondo Vs. the World, Who You Going to Take?

Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo is one of the fastest players in the NBA, able to go coast-to-coast in practically no time. Chris Johnson of the Tennessee Titans has quickly become one of the best running backs in football, running a 4.24 40 time and just blowing past defenders. Never one to avoid a challenge, Rondo let it be known he wants to race Johnson.

According to Johnson’s Twitter feed

America needs to see this race! I hope this happens, we could soon see a whole new era of sports competition with super-athletes matching their physical prowesses against one another.

Erin Andrews Wants to Make Sure You Notice the Herpes

After the University of Texas’ defeat of rival Texas A&M on Thursday, star QB Colt McCoy stopped with Erin Andrews after the game for a quick chat. America’s sideline princess is all class calling out attention to the herpes explosion on his lip that he of course insisted was from “biting his lip.”

Sure thing, Danny.

The Penguins and Steelers Suggest You Pack it Up

As weird as it is to believe, over the last decade the second-best city for championships has been Pittsburgh. Sure, the Pirates are miserable, but 2 Steelers championships, a Penguins Cup and multiple late-round playoff trips for both teams shows that the Pittsburgh is a force to be reckoned with. On the heels of success comes entrepreneurs eager to exploit it for their own gain and the Steel City is no exception.

If you’re a big-time Penguins or Steelers fan forget replica jerseys, t-shirts or beer cozies, there’s only one true way to show everyone how much you care; “tobacco pipes.”

Now, I’d never get one of these, not my style (or teams) but if I had to choose, you gotta go with the Penguins one right? I mean, the color scheme is just so much better, and let’s face it, style matters.
