Take the Plunge

article-0-040d0534000005dc-601_634x353Pedro Olivia, a kayaking enthusiast is also a fucking WACKO. That’s because he decided to take his kayak over the Salto Belo waterfalls off the Rio Sacre, a tributary of the Amazon in Brazil. The falls, 127 feet high, pour 5,000 cubic feet of 70 degree water every second and yet still Olivia looked at it and thought this was a good idea.

The entire fall took 2.9 seconds, with him traveling nearly 70 mph, and in the process Olivia shattered the previous world record (108 ft) for a descent in a kayak. With a drop nearly 60 feet higher than that of Niagra Falls, you’d think it would be fraught with danger, but the Salto Belo falls were specifically chosen because they provide an extra layer of safety for kayakers.

“Although people have certainly perished upon hitting a pool of water from such heights, the team counted on the massive, gushing rivers of central Brazil to produce the softest water landings on Earth,” said Ben Stookesberry, the leader of Olivia’s team.

“With the massive amount of water mixing with 127 feet of air, the landing was much more like 15 feet of churning dry powder snow than the hard surface of a lake.”

After scouring the falls for the perfect place to go over, the 26 year old Brazilian finally found the optimal boulder-free place. As his crew filmed the whole process, Olivia went over the falls, plunged head-first into a deep pool, disappearing for a few harrowing minutes until he resurfaced, unharmed behind the waterfall. He then grabbed onto a rock formation so as to right himself before floating down the river and meeting up with his crew.

“The actual free fall felt like an eternity of acceleration and waiting for a huge impact in the pool below,” Olivia said. “As I drifted over vertical into a head down position I braced for the worst in a protective tuck position. But the massive impact never came.”

“It’s a story that I will be telling for the rest of my life,” Olivia continued. “In all I have spent the better part of 13 years developing my kayaking skills, searching the Brazilian rivers for the most spectacular rapids and falls.”

I’m both jealous and very happy that I wasn’t the one doing this. But hey, Pedro now owns a world record, so that’s neat!

Here’s the link to the video of him actually going over, check it out!

Don’t Play Pool With This Guy

I suck at pool; I’m more likely to rip the felt off your table than actually hit the ball into a pocket, so this video is especially impressive to me. Here is Semih Sayginer hitting some totally kickass shots that seem to be ridiculously hard, I think it is safe to say that this guy has some skills. I’d highly recommend not playing a game for money with him.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

After the jump, the best billiards related comedy clip ever, from the ever-wonderful Mr. Show, it’s Van Hammersly, host of a series of how-to billiards videos.

Stop Hitting Yourself

Mike Tyson was one of the most ferocious boxers ever, he would deliver his fury upon opponents without stopping until they were knocked out cold. Tyson Fury, a British born boxer doesn’t quite have the same killer instinct, despite having a perfect boxing name. Fury in fact comes from a long-line of boxers and bare-knuckle brawlers, you’d think with such a family history that he’d be familiar with how to throw a punch. Unfortunately on March 14, in a fight against Lee Swaby, Fury threw a punch that missed his opponent but managed to hit Fury straight on in the face. Now that’s TALENT!

And join us after the jump for another angle of this epic pugilistic moment.

Did You Learn That He Hits Hard?

Ever wanted to know what it’d be like to fight a professional MMA fighter? Yeah, me either because I don’t like being hit, but this guy did and set up a brief sparring session with Mike “Bonesaw” Hyman. They set up some ground rules; Mike would “take it easy” and no hits to the face. That doesn’t stop the pudgy normal guy from getting stomped on, even with Bonesaw taking it really really easy on him.

Swimmer Double Bags it, Gets a DQ

Moderately-attractive Swedish swimmer Therese Alshammar broke her own 50-meter butterfly record in Australia on Tuesday, but the record was short-lived. Officials from the Australian swimming association and FINA, the international swimming authority disqualified Alshammar because she was wearing two bathing suits, a violation of the new rules ratified last weekend.

Alshammar wears the second suit for comfort she told Swedish TV, “In case your swim suit bursts, it’s nice to have a double,” she said. “I have a regular swim suit under my performance suit because it makes me feel more secure and it covers more of my chest. It’s not something that makes you swim faster. If anything it makes you slower to have such a swimsuit underneath.”

Didn’t she know that double-bagging leads to too much friction and can cause problems?

A Solution for the Marlins

If the fans seem a little bit more subdued than usual at Nottingham Rugby games recently, there’s a good reason for it. Suffering a severe economic crisis and with few fans in the stands, the Nottingham Rugby club decided upon a interesting solution to drum up fan interest, inflatable fans.

_45570890_ml466Reaching out to a local company, Airheads, that specializes in artificially creating crowds for TV and movies, the club had 1,000 inflatable fans placed around the stadium, dressed to make them seemingly indistinguishable from the live fans. Which says a lot about the British people but that’s a whole other story…

Airheads’ director, Lee Harris was excited about the whole thing:

“As a local firm we are really keen to support Nottingham Rugby in their quest to raise the profile of the club. We are hoping an extra 1,000 ‘people’ in the crowd against Exeter, will encourage supporters of both rugby and sport to come and get behind their successful local team. Hopefully it will add to the atmosphere, and inspire people to come back again next week and help the team qualify for the Cup Final by beating Leeds.”

Fitting in with the 1,305 real fans in the crowd, the inflatable fans helped spur the Nottingham side to victory and continuing on in their pursuit of the National Trophy. Reportedly, the cup run might help stave off disaster for the club, although fan attendance has still remained a problem, hence of course, the inflatables.

I can’t wait for this to come to the US.

Two Hands on the Ball

bowler__1237117061_7948The Professional Bowling Association is desperate for attention, once one of the most popular sports on television, these days bowling is largely ignored by the mass populace because, you know, it’s boring. There was a time in the early 1980s when bowling was king; the PBA scored better television ratings than the Masters and the NBA finals weren’t even broadcast on TV.

Enter Jason Belmonte, a 25 year old Australian with an unorthodox style and 34 perfect games to his resume. Throwing two-handed, with just two fingers in the ball, Belmonte is able to generate significantly more rotations on the ball as it rolls down the lane, thus generating more energy to transfer to the pins. Most professional bowlers get about 400 rotations of the ball with each throw, Belmonte’s unique style enables him to get over 630 per toss.

The amateur World Bowler of the Year twice, (2004, 2007) Belmonte grew up in the bowling lanes his parents owned in Orange, Australia, about 130 miles west of Sydney. As an 18-month old his parents would give him a pair of shoes and a ball and let him have at the lanes for hours at a time, and since he wasn’t able to lift the 10-pound ball he started his two-handed motion. He won his first tournament at age 4, by 5 he was averaging 118 a round. Continue reading ‘Two Hands on the Ball’

Sign Me Up for the Iditarod

Apparently, racing dogs through a vast snowy landscape and through blistering cold can make you go a little bit crazy, who knew? Current Iditarod race leader Lance Mackey reported from the course that he saw an apparition the other day along the track.

Fatigue can do funny things to long-distance mushers, Mackey said. On Thursday night, he was riding the sled and saw a girl sitting by the side of the trail doing something, probably knitting.

“She laughed at me, waved, and I went by her and she was gone,” Mackey said of his hallucination. “You just laugh.”

Do you know how hard it is to find good hallucinogens these days? And these mushers are getting the good stuff, FOR FREE! I’m pissed no one told me about this until now. It turns out that Mackey isn’t the only one who this happens to, apparently it is very common among dog sledders. For instance, via Help Sled Dogs comes these other stories:

  • “I was exhausted and had already begun to hallucinate during the last hour of traveling, seeing the small people of the woods, hearing low-flying airplanes in the middle of the night.”
  • “I’ve seen villages, freight trains and cabins that were not there”
  • “I saw animals-a rock pile became a bison, a stump became a moose.”
  • “I was home from school, about 7 years old, standing in my grandmother’s kitchen with my chin just about counter height, watching, smelling while Granny slathered a slice of homemade bread with bacon grease.”
  • “And then I began to hallucinate. I saw people standing beside the trail, never anyone I recognized. They talked and laughed among themselves like they were waiting for my arrival at a nonexistent checkpoint. I turned and as the light of my headlamp swept over them they stopped talking and turned their heads to stare at me as we passed. Sometimes they were back from the trail and I only heard voices, catching snippets of conversations, never any intelligible words, but I assumed they were talking about me.”

I had no idea that all I needed to do to trip balls was go into the wilderness of Alaska and nearly die thanks to exposure. I can’t believe I’ve been missing out all this time. Continue reading ‘Sign Me Up for the Iditarod’

Don’t Discount Mike Tyson’s Fame

During a grappling tournament in Beijing, China last week one of the wrestlers opted to take a more Tysonian view of his opponent and bit a healthy chunk off his opponent, drawing blood.

Alibieke, a wrestler from the western province of Xinjiang was given a warning and “criticism,” but was allowed to continue the match, ultimately winning 2-0. Understandably, Yeerlanbieke Katai the opposing wrestler was less than enthused. “Katai let out a bloodcurdling cry and protested to the referee that he had been bitten,” Xinhua news agency said in a report reproduced by the Beijing News.

“If it wasn’t for that, I would have definitely finished that attack and taken the set,” Katai continued, saying that he was in a prime attacking position right before the attack took place. After the match Katai sported a “huge” bite mark near his elbow.

Obviously, the Chinese officials are taking the whole thing in stride. “Wrestling is an intense sport… Athletes, it can be said, are exerting their all and sometimes are not able to control themselves very well,” said Dong Shenghui, wrestling director within China’s General Administration of Sports.

How very understated, Dong.

Scare the Crap Right Out of You

ski-jump-stall

The Japanese truly are light-years ahead of us. This toilet is one of several at various Japanese ski resorts as part of a promotion from Coca-Cola for their Georgia Max coffee brand. You sit down, place your feet in the bindings and let ‘er rip! If that steep drop staring you in the face doesn’t loosen you up, you should probably see a doctor…

I sincerely hope we get these kind of promotions in the US, of course, I would never, ever use a public bathroom, but I might go in and check it out, careful not to touch anything.

Six Year Old Climbs 5 Mt. Everests

tomfryerWhen Tom Fryers was born six years ago, he nearly died from breathing issues, but some skillful work by doctors kept him alive and he’s doing everything he can to repay their good actions.

For the last 62 days, the Oxspring, South Yorks native has hiked up 214 mountain peaks in the Lake District part of North West England, the combined height of the mountains equals 5(!) Mt. Everests. Traveling 480 miles, he has done it all, including in one hardcore 15-mile sojourn conquering the two highest peaks in England the 3,162 foot Scafell and the 3,209 foot Scafell Pike. His efforts have raised almost $3,500 for the hospital’s special-care baby unit.

His dad, Paul has joined his son throughout the journey. “It’s a miracle Tom survived. Now he couldn’t be more alive.”

Tom, who started climbing at just 3½, said: “The best part is going down — but it’s also good being at the top.”

I feel old and lazy. Ah well, back to blogging!
