Corky, You Still Suck

After all the, justifiable, hooplah surrounding his non-vote of Rickey Henderson, embattled elderly sportswriter Corky Simpson who we discussed the other day now says that he made a mistake. According to Simpson, he “goofed” and forgot to include Henderson on his ballot. “Rickey deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, and if I had my ballot back, he’d have a shot at unanimity — and I wouldn’t be hated by quite so many people,” Simpson said

However, I think he’s full of shit. That’s because fellow “Green Valley News sportswriter Nick Prevenas said he warned Simpson about leaving Henderson off his ballot when he filed the column, but Simpson told him he ‘wasn’t a Rickey guy and that he would vote for him next time.'”

So clearly Simpson doesn’t regret his pick, he regrets that he has been publicly embarrassed for selfishly marring Rickey Henderson’s legacy. That Simpson could pick Tim Raines and NOT Rickey Henderson shows that Simpson has some semblance of understanding regarding modern statistical evaluation which shows clearly the value that Rock Raines had on the ball field, but clearly something else was in play.

It is simply indefensible to not include Rickey Henderson on your ballot unless you are trying to be the person who doesn’t include him solely because no one has been elected unanimously. You know what, there is also no openly gay person in the HoF, does that mean no gay man can EVER be in? Just because the old baseball writers were morons and didn’t elect players when they should doesn’t mean we should continue that tradition.

You know, in the 40s there were players that local reporters might NEVER EVER see. The only interaction baseball voters may have had with those players were radio broadcasts and box scores. Today, we have access to EVERYTHING a player does on the field, we can see every time he makes contact on a ball, and not only that, but where he hit it, what type of pitch it was and what he does when the count is 2-0 and there are two men on in the month of June when the sun is shining.

Now there is simply no excuse for not knowing the players, particularly for something seemingly as important as the HoF. If the hall weren’t so important why would the BBWAA make its members take 10 YEARS before they are allowed to vote?

So, back to Simpson and his “apology” which to me is a big crock of shit. If Simpson valued his vote and the HoF he wouldn’t have put Matt Williams on the ballot, no matter how nice a guy he is, hey Corky, I’m a nice guy, put me on next year! Nor would he make an asinine anti-Mark McGwire comment invoking steroids while ignoring that Williams put up extremely suspicious numbers, was mentioned in the Mitchell Report and was found to have received syringes and HGH (at the LEAST) from the same dentist who was busted for providing other athletes with illegal substances.

That’s hypocrisy.

If Simpson really believed that Rickey belongs in the Hall of Fame, why wait on your vote? Sure, Rickey will get in without Simpson, but so what, that’s not a reason to not vote. I’m from Massachusetts, if I don’t vote for Ted Kennedy he’ll still get elected, but does that mean I should vote for someone else just to be nice? Or that I shouldn’t at all? That’s fucking childish.

No, the only thing Simpson is upset about is that his semi-retirement has been upended by a barrage of anti-Corky Simpson sentiment. The only person to blame though, is Simpson himself. I will agree that the vehemence of some of the commenters on his story is unnecessary, but that’s the internet, where assholes reign. However, Simpson knew that Rickey Henderson was going to be elected to the HoF, there is no doubt. There is also no doubt that in leaving Rickey off the ballot it was a conscious and purposeful act. There is simply no way you could look at the list of eligible players and not consider Henderson a Hall of Famer. Unless Simpson wants to admit that his mental faculties are no longer there and he is unable to come up with cogent thoughts, but I’m going to assume that is not the case since he still seems to form sentences together. If he has lost his wits, then his vote DEFINITELY should be taken away.

I’m willing to give the benefit of the doubt that Simpson still has working synapses and so chose to leave Henderson off the list purposefully and maliciously. Also, how can you NOT be a “Rickey guy,” what more could you want from a player? He won MVPs, he set a nearly unbreakable record with steals, he set a nearly unbreakable record in runs, his walks record was phenomenal and only could be, and was, bested by one player, Barry Bonds. The only weak part of Rickey’s game was his fielding, but it wasn’t as though he was TERRIBLE, just in comparison to his prodigious lead-off ability it is lesser.

No matter what he says, Corky Simpson clearly put himself above the game, above the HoF. By purposely leaving Henderson off the ballot he willfully took away the opportunity to get someone elected unanimously, and maybe, hopefully, ending the era of hanging onto useless old traditions.

Unfortunately, Corky Simpson seems like just another useless old tradition too.

Couple Finds Oldest Baseball Card Ever in Box

Bernice Gallego is a 72 year old woman who, along with her husband Al, 80, runs an antiques store in Fresno, California. As she normally does, one day this summer she started listing some of their items on eBay for sale when she pulled a baseball card out of a box. After debating whether to list it for $10 or $15 to start, she opted for the lower price, saving $.20 in the bargain. Nearly immediately, she started to get inquiries on the card with multiple people seeking to have her end the auction immediately and sell them the card directly.

With her interest piqued, she removed the auction and started looking into the card. It turns out, the card, made in 1869 is considered to be the first baseball card EVER. On it are featured the 10 members of the Cincinnati Red Stockings the first professional baseball team, it was taken in 1869 as an advertisement for Peck & Snyder, a company that sold baseball equipment.

Until she was certain of what she had and to keep it protected, Gallego put the card in a sandwich bag and hung it from the laundry room wall because “If it fell off the wall, the cat would have ate it,” Gallego says. “Well, or the dog.”

MATT F’ING WILLIAMS!

As the ballots have been handed in, many of the BBWAA are publishing their ballots for the Hall of Fame and their explanations for them. Corky Simpson of the Green Valley News and Sun started writing for newspapers in 1958 and he retired from writing full-time in 2006 after 48 years. Someone should have taken away his BBWAA membership then, and if not then, than immediately today. That’s because he released his ballot and it features 8 of the maximum 10 votes.

His ballot is as follows: Bert Blyleven, Andre Dawson, Tommy John, Don Mattingly, Tim Raines, Jim Rice, Alan Trammel and Matt Williams.

Notice a big name not on the list? How about RICKEY HENDERSON, the GREATEST FUCKING LEADOFF HITTER OF ALL TIME!?!?!?!

But sure, MATT WILLIAMS should be on your ballot. Here’s Simpson’s explanation, “Matt Williams, my first Hall of Fame vote for an Arizona Diamondback player. Matty played 17 seasons for the Giants, Indians and Diamondbacks. Nobody ever played the game with more intensity, nor with more reverence for the sport.”

Um, those are NOT reasons to be in the Hall of Fame, the HoF is for the GREATEST PLAYERS TO EVER PLAY THE GAME (and Luis Aparicio) not for someone who played hard. Now, don’t get me wrong, Williams was a nice player, he played for a long time and was fairly consistent, but was he ever one of the best players of his time? NOPE! Sure, he was an All-Star, but fuck, so was Mark Redman a few years ago…That’s simply not enough reason to include him on a ballot. Nor is leaving two empty slots when RICKEY HENDERSON IS STILL NOT ON YOUR BALLOT!

Putting Matt Williams on your ballot is a giant admission that you are an assh0le and don’t care about the Hall of Fame. Not to mention having Tommy John, Don Mattingly and Jim Rice on your ballot, none of whom deserves to be in the HoF, and I’m on the fence about Trammel.

And to further show just how completely out of touch Simpson is, with I can only imagine some sort of dementia, check out this bit from the end of his article.

“Others honored with nomination this year and who may well be voted into the Hall of Fame, include Harold Baines, Jay Bell, David Cone, Ron Gant, Mark Grace, Rickey Henderson, Jack Morris, Dale Murphy, Jesse Orosco, Dave Parker, Dan Plesac, Lee Smith, Greg Vaughn and Mo Vaughn.”

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!?!?! GREG VAUGHN! JESSE OROSCO? DAN PLESAC!?!?!?! JAY BELL! And you include Rickey Henderson in that group? Not a single member of that group who “may well be voted into the Hall of Fame” deserves even a FREE TICKET to the HoF let alone actual membership. Dale Murphy is Jim Rice but having played in Atlanta, David Cone is another good but not great player, Grace is basically Williams with doubles instead of HRs. UGH.

This makes me SO ANGRY. How ANYONE could not see Rickey Henderson as a HoFer is simply beyond me. Particularly when that person thinks MATT WILLIAMS is more deserving.

Someone take away Corky’s vote immediately and see that his ballot is rejected for coming from a retarded person.

Bring Hanley Back

It seems like it’s a moot point, but I like the aggressiveness of the Red Sox brass in checking in on former farmhand Hanley Ramirez’ availability in the aftermath of the Teixeira signing. That said, the reported starting price of Clay Buchholz and Jacoby Ellsbury seem pretty high. Even still, I’m not sure it’s not worth it to get Hanley, with the condition that Ramirez comes as a center fielder and not as a shortstop. I didn’t want to give up Jacoby and Buchholz for Johan Santana but for Hanley I think it is not necessarily too much. All of 25 years old, Ramirez has averaged 27 HRs and 36 steals per season with a career OPS+ so far of 135!

Sure, would giving up on Buchholz and Ellsbury hurt? You bet it would, just as the initial trading away of Hanley did, but just like that trade, the reward would, I believe, ultimately outweigh that cost. Adding Hanley as a center fielder would add that power bat to the lineup that the Sox need, his speed matches Jacoby’s, keeping that new element in the Sox’ game and his star is rising, every year Hanley is getting better and better. If he can be moved off shortstop where he is a butcher getting by on sheer athleticism I think there is no reason he isn’t one of the most dominant players in the game for the next 10 years.

On the other hand, for the Marlins, even getting back two STUD prospects might not be enough for Hanley. That franchise has no one else to market their team around otherwise. I mean, Dan Uggla does not park fans in the seats. Then again, nobody on the Marlins seems to bring fans to the stadium…

The Reds Can’t Win

I guess the trade of Ryan Freel and the loss of Corey Patterson left Reds management desperate for another singles-only hitter who barely contributes to your team, they signed Willy Taveras over the weekend to a 2-year deal. Sure, Taveras has lots of speed and had a ton of infield hits (37 bunt singles in 2007!) but he is incapable of scoring runs. Even on that strong offensive 2007 Rockies team, which scored 860 runs, and in spite of hitting .320 and stealing 33 bags, Taveras managed a scant 64 runs.

Yes, it was in only 97 games, but that’s a pretty good sample size, and this year in 133 games he also scored only 64 runs, this time stealing 68 bases. Maybe it has something to do with having an anemic OPS and thus being incapable of hitting at the top of the lineup. In 2007, which by any reasonable measure was Taveras’ best year, he managed an OPS+ of 89. 89! He had 120 hits last season and 102 of them were singles, and that’s with playing in Colorado with the spacious alleys. Essentially, he can’t hit the ball out of the infield, and if he can’t leg out a hit he has no chance of ever getting one.

Also, his defense is atrocious. For someone who is so fast he gets bad reads on balls, misses plays he should get and doesn’t patrol center field impressively at all.

At first glance I hated this deal for the Reds, but astonishingly, after looking at the remaining free agent outfielders I changed my mind.  Continue reading ‘The Reds Can’t Win’

Fuck the Yankees

While I’m disappointed to see the Yankees land Mark Teixeira, this doesn’t change my outlook for the 2009 Boston Red Sox. However, the 2010-2017 teams I’m a bit more concerned about. Of COURSE the Yankees swoop in at the last minute and sign Teixeira, it’s a great move by Brian Cashman, let everyone else get bogged down in daily rumors and innuendo, and then, when the heavy lifting has been done, bring me the best offer and I’ll beat it. That’s just smart business. Out of all the teams that were pursuing him, no one needed Tex more than the Yankees or the Angels. Now the Angels are SOL and announced that they aren’t going to go after Manny Ramirez, meaning that their offense looks to struggle once more without protection for Vladdy.

With the signing of Teixeira the Yankees now have the 4 highest paid players in MLB on their team. A-Rod, CC, Tex and Cap’n Jetes. Wow. Based on the reports, the deal is for 8 years for $180 million, which brings the Yankees offseason spending on a grand total of three players to $423 million. That’s a lot! Oh, and the Yankees infield now makes approximately $75 million just on their own. Yikes!

The good news for Sox fans is that presumably Mike Lowell stays now! So that’s neat, for the next year or two. Sigh. Lars Anderson our power-hitting first base prospect better pay off… It looks like the free agent contract for Joe Mauer (free agent agent at the end of the 2010 season) is going to be RIDICULOUS! Otherwise, it looks like the Sox are left with the one that brung them to the dance.

At least now I can think 0ut loud all the negative things about Teixeira that I was trying to talk myself out of when this whole business began. For example, since he left the hitter’s park in Texas he hasn’t been the same power-wise. He’s not a centerpiece player, he’s a strong complementary one, and not really worth $22.5 million for the production he provides, maybe 18-19. Teixeira has been an All-Star all of ONCE and he’s been nowhere near an MVP award. My other big concern is that Teixeira is brutal in the early months of the year, and while he powers up later in the season, I wonder how he’ll handle it in the very different weather of the Northeast as compared to Atlanta and Texas. While he had a very nice OPB during the playoffs this year, besides making a great play with the glove, he did little besides hit singles and get walks and so he did pretty much nothing to help his team score runs.

Fortunately, now Tex and A-Rod can together destroy the Yankees in the postseason.

The one thing this signing deprives us of is the hilarious Teixeira press conference after signing with the Nationals where he would have said it was about coming home and nothing to do with them offering him more money. Now he can say he came to NY for the mystique and to win and no one will begrudge him, so his public image can remain blemish-free. Unfortunately, now I have 8 years of looking at Tex in pinstripes and wondering what could have been.

Teixeira and A-Rod only played one season together in Texas, but they combined for 73 HRs and 202 RBIs, and that was Tex’s rookie season. I expect the two of them to roughly hit 400-500 HRs combined over the length of their deals.

So long Tex. Now I hate you and your horse face.

See Baseball on the Cheap

Prior to the official opening of the new Yankee Stadium and the unending printing of money that will ensure, the Yankees organization is actually doing something nice for the fans. On April 3 and 4 the Yankees will be playing exhibition games against the Chicago Cubs and as a gift to the fans there are several ticket deals. Fans who have full-season ticket licenses will get free tickets for the games, partial plan people will get the first opportunity to purchase tickets and the individual tickets won’t exceed $50. OK, that’s kind of nice, but still not a great deal for those in the population who don’t have a lot of thousand of dollars to spend on season tickets. For everyone else, how about tickets in the bleachers for 25 and grandstand for 110. Not bad right. Oh, I should mention that is 25 CENTS and 110 CENTS not dollars, the same price as at the opening of the original Yankee Stadium in 1923.

I don’t like to praise the Yankees, for anything, but this is a pretty good deal. Sure, it’s only for two games, exhibition ones at that, but they are also the first games to be played at the new stadium and that ordinary fans might be able to go for that cheap is pretty awesome. Of course, scalpers will probably swallow the cheap seats all up and ordinary fans will be left paying an arm and a leg again but, at least the idea is nice…

Bronson Arroyo Believes in Friendship

Bronson Arroyo will always have a special place in my heart, his precious corn-rows were so darling when he pitched for the Sox, and for a brief period he was a totally solid 5th starter. Sure that Wily Mo trade didn’t work out, but I liked the move at the time because I thought Wily Mo might one day learn to hit a curveball. It turns out that’ll never happen.

Anyways, in the most recent Sporting News magazine they picked Bronson to be profiled with the standard generally uninteresting questions. What’s in your Ipod? OOh hard-hitting informative journalism! But, things get interesting when Bronson says his motto is: “It ain’t no fun unless the homeys can have some!” – Snoop Dogg.

Hmm…

Let’s look at where that lyric comes from, the fabulous, “Ain’t No Fun (If the Homies Can’t Have None)” from Snoop’s debut, Doggystyle. For example, in verse 2, when Kurupt comes in with this: “I have no love for hoes/That’s somethin I learned in the pound/so how the fuck am I supposed/to pay this hoe, just to lay this hoe/I know the pussy’s mine, I’ma fuck a couple more times/And then I’m through with it, there’s nothing else to do with it/Pass it to the homie, now you hit it/Cause she ain’t nuthin but a bitch to me/And y’all know, that bitches ain’t shit to me.”

So, Bronson’s motto is to make sure that all his friends get to fuck girls together. Now, I like my friends, I enjoy hanging out with them, we have a very nice time. Among the things we don’t do is share women, because you know, that’s not classy. And we are NOTHING but classy. Also, maybe it’s just me, but the idea of hooking up with someone immediately after one of my friends did, to me, is not that appealing, maybe I’m not cut out for the rap game after all…

Jack Wilson is Delusional

Jack Wilson, the all-glove no-hit shortstop of the Pittsburgh Pirates is frustrated by the never ending losing and wants to see the Pirates actually succeed for once.

“The only thing I wish we could do was compete. I wish we could go out and get some more players to make our team competitive. And, you know…that’s going to be my new focus on the Internet: Instead of looking for my name and where I might go, hopefully, we might get some players. Because we need them.”

Now, to be fair, he’s right the Pirates DO need players, thus far their biggest off-season moves have been signing utility scrub Ramon Vazquez and resigning catcher Ryan Doumit. Not exactly headline news…Then again, seeing that the Pirates are paying $7.25 million this year for Jack Wilson, who has a career OPS+ of 78(!!!!!), a player who in 8 years has NEVER had an OPB above .350 or really been anything better than MEDIOCRE at the plate for 6 of 8 years. But yeah, the Pirates need to get some players. No. They need to get rid of STUPID contracts and useless one-dimensional players who play premium positions.

“I wanted to make sure that, if I was giving up a couple years of free agency, I had a chance of competing. That’s one of the main things that went into my signing that piece of paper [his 3 year extension signed in 2006], that we’d compete,” Wilson said, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “Since I signed that, that hasn’t happened. We’ve lost key players who were going to be part of that team they were talking about. They are now gone.”

Yes, they have lost key players, like Jason Bay, but otherwise, Xavier Nady and Jeff Suppan are probably the biggest losses since he’s been on the team and I think any good baseball fan will agree that neither of those players are people you want to base a team around.

Wilson continued being completely wrong when he told the paper, “The biggest thing stressed over the past year was accountability. That includes everybody in the organization, as far as having accountability for themselves and in wanting to win. It’s not just the players.” Sure, accountability is great, does that mean you’ll be returning some of the $20 million dollars you’ll have earned over the last 4 years seeing that the closest players careers to yours include such luminaries as Adam Kennedy, Christian Guzman and DEIVI CRUZ!!!! (comparison score of 942!!!!!!!) Anytime you’re mentioned in the same breath with Deivi Cruz (whose career OPS+ was, you guessed it 78!)  is NOT a good thing.

Hey Jack, shut the fuck up, your team has been desperately trying to unload you for the last three years and have been unable to find a taker because of the sheer ridiculousness of your salary. You want to help the Pirates, tell them you want to be paid what you deserve, the league minimum and have them pay the 7 million they owe you to someone who can actually PLAY baseball. You know, like hit the ball and stuff. I know it is EXTREMELY hard for you, but most professional ballplayers are able to do that…

Also, your mouth is terrifying looking, that smile/sneer thing of yours is truly hideous. You should NEVER been seen in HD.

Schilling Says He and Manny Fought 4 Times

While doing an event with WEEI’s Dennis and Callahan to help fund raise for Curt Schilling’s ALS charities, Schill took some questions from the audience and had some interesting words to say about his time with Manny Ramirez as a teammate. Most interesting, Schilling revealed that during his years as a teammate he and Manny had 4 different physical run-ins with each other. Curt also claimed that his teammates stopped him from going after Manny the first time Schilling noticed him taking a play off, early on in Schilling’s tenure as a Red Sox. None of this is particularly “news” but it’s interesting nonetheless, I have a feeling that years from now when a bunch more books are written about these Red Sox teams that we’re going to learn a lot more about who Manny Ramirez was behind the scenes and how his teammates reacted to him. In the meantime, we have the chief blowhard Schilling out there letting us know.
