Sox Uniforms This Year Don’t Make Me Barf

For the last few years the Red Sox have donned special green uniforms in honor of St. Patrick’s Day–and last year also to celebrate the Celtics’ championship–the ones that they used recently were AWFUL, looking like some cheap softball beer league uniforms more than those of a Major League team. This year, the team made a switch, opting for their classic white uniforms with special green lettering and a clover patch of the sleeve. Classy, stylish and much better way to celebrate St. Paddy’s day. I’m still not crazy about the green hats, but one battle at a time.

A-Rod LOVES Himself Some A-Rod

Even when he gets injured and can’t play baseball Alex Rodriguez hovers over everything baseball. Here is his cover shoot for details magazine which should go a long ways to convince everyone that A-Rod isn’t a self-obsessed douchenozzle. Oh yeah, and the story was written by Jason Gay. Seriously.

The New Rocket?

Everyone is talking about Jonathan Papelbon’s interview in Esquire where he calls Manny Ramirez a “cancer,” I for one, could care less. However, there was one small throw-away tidbit in the article I found particularly interesting. Since he left the team in 1996, Roger Clemens’ number “21” hasn’t been worn by a Red Sox player, but when the Sox were planning on reconverting Papelbon to a starter for the 2007 season “They…offered him the number 21, Roger Clemens’s old number, because they thought the favorable comparison might help Papelbon take to the idea. But the role didn’t sit right with him, and neither did the number.”

I like the Sox’ thinking here, it’s an interesting inspirational idea, but I also like Papelbon’s insistence on forging his own path, the “58” he wears was a random assignment, one he is turning into it’s own legendary number. Paps is building his own legacy, he doesn’t need to pick up on Clemens’.

Hey LeBron, Buy Us a Chipotle for No Reason!

Remember Casey Weber, the high schooler who made the 90 foot shot for Dayton Christian High School, well, ESPN, after probably reading about him here, sent a camera crew to check out Weber, who for a local TV crew made another 80 foot shot during a practice. Now, he and his high school team are challenging LeBron James to a contest.

The DCHS team issued a formal challenge to LeBron saying, “Hey, LeBron, anytime, anyplace!” The contest would be the first player to make a full-court shot wins. If Weber does it, the team wants LeBron to buy them a burrito restaurant, of course, they don’t mention what’s in it for LeBron if (when) he wins. My guess is the kids ain’t buying HIM a restaurant. But I love the balls on these kids, after all, LeBron is rich why wouldn’t he just want to buy these kids a Chipotle just cuz right? (I’m assuming it’s a Chipotle because A) it’s Dayton, Ohio and I doubt there are any good real Mexican places, B) They’re high schoolers and Chipotle is the pinnacle of their lives currently.)

MLB Will Use Anyone to Sell Merch

mlb-networkMLB has been working hard to move past the steroids era, distancing themselves from the players who have been tainted by the scandal. Unless of course, those players could help MLB make some more money still…

Teams couldn’t move fast enough away from Barry Bonds, despite him being the all time home run king. But then, for example, here is a screenshot from the MLB Shop where they have special sections for Barry Bonds and Alex Rodriguez. They also have a special section for Chien-Mien Wang, so I don’t know WHAT is going on.

However, I am willing to wager you that anything from the Derek Jeter collection will give you crabs.

Yankee Stadium (But Not Jeter) to be Disease-Free

When the new Yankee Stadium opens next month it will be the first antimicrobial facility in Major League Baseball. Undergoing a special treatment, the stadium itself will kill illness causing microorganisms, molds, fungi and bacteria for up to 3 years.

No word on what this means for Shelley Duncan’s future at the stadium…

Baseball Cards Enter the 31st Century

null-640569223-1236708617Baseball cards used to be the coolest thing ever, of course, I was 8 at the time and little else going on…now I have wireless internet, so I’m gaining in the world!

Unfortunately, baseball cards have become a dwindling industry, going from being a billion dollar powerhouse to a $200 million pathetic hot mess. So, in an effort to spice up their fortunes, Topps is looking to completely revolutionize the way cards are looked at. Taking your new Topps cards and placing them in front of your computer’s webcam and the picture on the card will turn 3-D! Move the card and the player will rotate with you letting you see everything, even his rippling muscles!

Topps, owned now by former Disney chairman Michael Eisner is desperate to rekindle interest in their cards and are hoping that the “Total Immersion” technology will respark desire and collecting. I personally doubt that this will make any difference. Maybe if the cards did it on their own, but needing to bring them to the computer is simply too much effort for me. We’ll see I suppose…

Cody Ransom Has Ups

When Alex Rodriguez announced his conveniently timed injury, Yankees outfielder Johnny Damon said that the Yankees wouldn’t be completely screwed over, because A-Rod’s likely replacement, Cody Ransom is “probably the best athlete on this team.” For example, there is this video of Ransom showing off his ridiculous 60 inch vertical leaping ability. That’s 5 FEET! I don’t know how useful vertical leaping ability is in baseball, but, you know, still pretty awesome.

Omar “Picasso” Vizquel Throws Down Some Paint

When I think of Omar Vizquel, I think of a slick fielding shortstop spraying singles all around the diamond, what I don’t think of is the man using oil paints to paint nudes. But, he is a man of many talents it seems, in September for example, he had an exhibition in a San Francisco art gallery of some of his finer works. Now, I’m no art critic, but I think he’s not half bad, and any time you can have a skeleton hang on a lady’s leg you know you’ve made me happy.

What do y’all think, should he stick with the glove or does he have a lucrative career ahead of him after he hangs up the spikes?

Bronson and Pedro Like to Party

bronson_arroyo_boat_bikini_party_1Fresh off my story about Bronson Arroyo’s boat, the Nasty Hook, comes these photos via Busted Coverage of what looks like a fun party onboard, complete with Bronson’s former Red Sox teammate Pedro Martinez.

Then there’s this, an anonymous message board poster with a passion for creative spelling who claimed to be on the boat during the party said that:

Me and my friend were on his boat in Miami for Ragatta over the weekend. Bronson and his friends were all there on the boat everybody was drinking and tubeing. I know my friend ended up hooking up with Bronson a couple times and said he sucked another girl was saying she did to. He calls my friend all the time now. He had some of his guy friends on the boat and one of them was the guy Tony somebody mentioned here all the guys were there witout there gf’s. AND everbody was hooking up in the boat bathroom. If Bronson does have a gf or fiancay it didnt stop him somebody said hes like 35 him and his freinds acted like they were in highscool.bronson_arroyo_boat_bikini_party_8

Now, since I don’t speak retard, I can’t completely decipher this but I get the general gist I think. Regardless, it looks like Pedro is in fine game shape and had a nice afternoon on the high seas, and you know what, he deserves it.

Eric Chavez Remains Sidelined

I like the Oakland A’s this year, I think their young pitching might make the leap and I like the offensive pieces they’ve assembled too. The additions of Matt Holliday, Orlando Cabrera, Jason Giambi and even his brittle-ness himself, Nomar Garciaparra should add some much needed pop and depth to the lineup.

So, it was disappointing, although not that surprising, to see the news that A’s third baseman Eric Chavez was a late scratch from his spring training debut on Monday. Having played in only 113 games the last two seasons due to injuries, Chavez hasn’t performed particularly well even when he has been on the field. After his last good season, in 2005, Chavez was signed to a 6 year $66 million contract, with the A’s making a noteworthy commitment to, at the time, one of the best third baseman in the game.

The deal was particularly interesting because of who was and WASN’T offered a long-term contract. The A’s made little effort to sign either Jason Giambi, the 2000 AL MVP or Miguel Tejada, the 2002 MVP when their contracts were up, despite both putting up prodigious numbers. While both men commanded extremely high salaries, a major reason for why no long term deal was offered, I wonder if there wasn’t something else to it.

Most baseball fans would agree that Billy Beane is one of the top GMs in baseball (in fact, we’ll have an excellent guest column on this very subject coming shortly) and that he chose to NOT lock up either of these stars is very interesting to me. Also, at the time, the Chavez deal helped set the market for his position, so it wasn’t as though the A’s were completely adverse to spending money on their homegrown talent.

Of course, since both Tejada and Giambi left the A’s they have been linked to and investigated for using steroids. Currently, Chavez has never been mentioned in any manner regarding performance enhancing drugs.
