Who the Hell is “El Caballito”

I watch a lot of Sox games, I listen to even more, I read the newspapers every day and follow the team in multiple formats, so it was with some surprise that I heard Chip Carey Caray last night refer to Dustin Pedroia as “El Caballito.” Caray stated during the broadcast, “How many times over the summer when we saw the Red Sox would we hear them talk about about ‘el caballito,’ the ‘little pony,’ Dustin Pedroia…” Um, what? I have never EVER EVER heard ANYONE refer to Pedroia as that. And yet, according to Chip Caray all summer long everyone refered to Pedroia in that manner. Methinks someone is screwing with Caray and fed him some bull. My money is on David Ortiz having told this to Caray as a joke and Caray, being an idiot, believed him and then decided to make it like he knew more about the team than he actually does and so said it like he did.

Also, I was getting really fucking frustrated with Caray’s insistence that Lester was replacing Beckett. It wasn’t as though Beckett was scratched 10 minutes before the game, the Sox set their pitching rotation over the weekend, it’s been many days since. Not only that, statistically Beckett was inferior to Lester this season. Now I’m not saying that Lester is automatically better because of that but it’s not like he’s some scrub. There was another asinine moment when Caray said “It’s so weird not to see Josh Beckett out on that mound.” Uh, you mean because of all those years he’s been in the playoffs with the Red Sox. By which I mean that ONE year he went to the playoffs with the Sox. Yeah, totally strange! It’s also super strange not to see Pete Schourek and Kent Mercker but you know, we soldier on.

Someone strangle Caray so we don’t have to listen to him for the rest of the series. Better yet, why don’t they just import Don Orsillo over from the Phillies Rays games, they don’t deserve him anyways.

Oh and one last thing while I’m on the announcers, when did David Ortiz’ name become Day-vid ORT-tiz? I don’t know what Buck Martinez was drinking last night but maybe he wants to slow down next game…

That’s because Chip is a fag and the worst baseball announcer this side of Joe Buck.

I actually heard this once in another TBS game, I think, earlier in the year and remembered it because it was so ridiculous (and awesome). But I hadn’t heard it again until now.

Orsillo is doing PBP for the Rays-White Sox series, not the Phillies-Brewers series.

It’s Caray, not Carey. Also of note? I call Pedroia “Lil’ Sparky”.

    That is all.

The Slanch Report has started an online petition asking the MLB Network to air the Dock Ellis no-hitter he threw on June 12, 1970 against the San Diego Padres. The moment was a seminal piece of baseball history and is certainly worthy of being rerun.
