I’m sure you have been watching Sportscenter and thought the same thing I have been, “This is nice and all, but wouldn’t we all be better served with holograms?” Well, ESPN has finally listened in to our thoughts (Disney has had that technology for YEARS) and given us what we wanted, and needed.
ESPN plans to expand on this technology by adding in “player cards” during studio coverage which will feature not only a 3D image of each NBAer, but also stats and bio information…Just to answer a few more of the questions I know you’re asking….yes the player will be in motion, and you can expect to only see them during a stand up presentation. Looks pretty neat, but it takes up a ton of the screen.
When current Tampa Bay Ray Joe Nelson was in college his coach suggested he convert from being a shortstop/third baseman to becoming a pitcher; success was slow to come at first, until Nelson developed an effective split-fingered type pitch, inspired by his love of Star Trek. Gripping the ball in a “Vulcan”-style, Nelson has finally found success at the big league level.
Uncomfortable with the traditional grip between his index and middle fingers, Nelson one day moved the ball to between his middle and ring fingers — “I just jammed it in there one day” — and it worked. He began throwing it regularly at the University of San Francisco and never stopped.
Then, of course, he had to decide what to call it. “Old enough” at 34 to have watched Star Trek TV show reruns (and, apparently, lots of other questionable shows) in addition to several of the movies, he figured that was the way to go.
“It was either going to be Nanu Nanu from Mork & Mindy, or the Vulcan,” Nelson said. “And Spock just seemed like a cooler character than Mork did.”
If you were to walk into David Eckstein’s home in San Diego it wouldn’t be unreasonable to see the 5′ 6″ scrub baseball player and mistake him as an actor on children’s television. Alas, you’d be wrong, it’s actually Eckstein’s super cute wife, Ashley Eckstein who is the star in this household.
Commuting from San Diego to LA, Ashley has recently been recording new episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated show, for which she voices Ahsoka Tano, a Jedi in-training. Ashley has also been in several That’s So Raven episodes so David should move that World Series MVP award off the mantle for her, after all she has won a much MUCH more valuable prize; Ashley won SILVER on Nickelodeon’s Guts. Now THAT’S scrappy.
After last night’s day/night double-header while doing the post-game wrap-up on NESN, Dennis Eckersley made clear what he thought about Brad Penny’s stuff saying:
He’s a little gay with his cheese.
Now, I don’t know EXACTLY what he means by that, but I got a pretty good idea, and I don’t think you’re supposed to say that on television… Unless of course Eck was just referring to his post-game meal plans…
Sad news for those of us who need to be yelled at by television personalities every day; after the NBA playoffs Stephen A. Smith’s contract with ESPN runs out and the two sides haven’t been able to come to terms on a new deal. Reportedly ESPN offered a significantly lower offer than he had previously been earning and Smith opted to walk away from the network.
I for one am disappointed, when he’s not yelling and trying to be a “personality” and is just a reporter, Smith is excellent; although recently he’s been replaced on the basketball beat by the likes of Tim Legler and JA Adande. I also miss the days when walking near Madison Square Garden I would constantly be approached by people looking to give me free tickets to go to a tapingof Quite Frankly with Stephen A. Smith. I mean, I never went, but it was nice to feel wanted.
The presumptive #1 pick in next weekend’s NFL draft, Matthew Stafford stopped by the set of Jimmy Fallon’s new late night skein and helped solidify his status. Now, I still believe the Lions should have traded for Matt Cassel, and given the Patriots better draft selections than the Chiefs, but based on Stafford’s abilities in Skeet Football, he may not be such a bad option…
Ah, what a show You Can’t Do That on Television was, and it was Canadian, did you know that? It’s true, that’s why Alannis Morrisette was on it. Did you know that too? It’s all true.
Unfortunately for Roger Millions of Rogers Sportsnet, I’m almost positive you can’t say THIS on television, even in Canada.
I’m not one for reality shows, and usually the ones about athletes are boring and uninteresting but an upcoming web-based show around Washington Redskins tight end Chris Cooley seems like it could be somewhat entertaining. At least briefly. I mean, it starts with a near-naked photo of Cooley and his wife, Christy a former Redskins cheerleader so there’s that at least.
The rest of the show seems like pretty standard fare, star-athlete-is-like-normal-guy-only-with-lots-of-money type skein, I doubt it reaches wide-spread popularity, but who knows, anything could happen.
The BBC has been forced to apologize to Liam Treadwell, the winning jockey of the Grand National Steeplechase race, after the BBC’s reporter Clare Balding “humiliated” him for making fun of his teeth. I didn’t know British people could BE humiliated when it comes to references about their bad teeth, I thought that was just an understood thing…
Fresh off winning the England’s famous steeplechase race, on a 100-1 long shot no less, Treadwell was interviewed by Balding who told him, “Liam, just give us a big grin to the camera. No, no, let’s see your teeth. He hasn’t got the best teeth in the world, but you can afford to go and get them done now if you like.”
Viewers complained in droves to the Beeb, even Treadwell’s mother Lorraine, was upset, saying “‘[Balding] was very mean.” Ooh, SCATHING!
Ms. Balding reached out and apologized directly to Treadwell, sending him a text message, which is pretty much the most classless way to apologize.
“Of course it was the wrong thing for her to say,” Treadwell said after the fact, “and under normal circumstances I might have said something back, but yesterday wasn’t a normal day. I was on top of the world and nothing could ruin that.”
The BBC released their own statement saying, “Clare Balding had no intention of upsetting or embarrassing Liam Treadwell, but fully accepts she should not have raised the subject. The BBC and Clare apologise for any offence caused.”
To be fair, Treadwell’s teeth are truly TERRIFYING; seriously, England, have you guys heard of the many modern advances in dentistry made since, oh I don’t know, the 1400s? I mean, Treadwell looks like Bat Boy for chrissakes.
MLB network has been firing on all cylinders, pumping out pretty strong programming, particularly for such a nascent entity. Now the network is planning on taking some of the most iconic moments in baseball history and give them a makeover. The six historic moments — like Willie Mays’ over-the-back catch and Jackie Robinson stealing home in the 1955 World Series –will serve as lead-ins to the Thursday night games the network will be broadcasting. MLB will take real footage and combine it with new footage of actors in a studio, mixing in computer-generated stadium backgrounds. The end result features a “sort of replay on steroids” which also includes new camera angles that weren’t possible at the time.
“It’s just meant to be fun and not a scientific recreation,” says MLBN president Tony Petitti. “It’s not meant to show if Jackie Robinson was really safe or out.”
The replays, only about 35-45 seconds include all sorts of modern shots that fans are now accustomed to, including zoom-ins on the catchers and cable-cam shots.
Check out one of the newly made-over spots by clicking this link, it features Bob Gibson and his 17 strikeout performance in the 1968 World Series. Overall, it looks kinda cool, if obviously messed with.
Also, here are my predictions for the names of the inevitable “Web Gems” and “Touch ‘Em All” knock-off segments that MLB Network’s MLB Tonight will certainly present. “Flashing the Leather” and “Going Yard.” You heard it here first.
Some days are harder to get through than others, but today is a good day. That’s because the best show that none of you are watching is coming back, for at least two more seasons! That’s right, Variety is reporting that Friday Night Lights will be back for 2 more seasons of 13 episodes each, with DirectTV broadcasting the season first and then NBC broadcasting the episodes in January. I CANNOT WAIT! Season 3 has been phenomenal and returns right back to the magic of season 1 which was as near to perfection as broadcast TV gets. If you aren’t watching FNL get on it right now, you can watch full episodes on NBC.com, so GET ON IT, trust me, once you start watching this show you will be hooked. Everyone I have turned onto it has become a full-fledged fan. Hell, send me an email and I’ll burn you some episodes, you MUST start watching this show. Oh yeah, and in addition to the excellent writing, the fantastic performances of Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler and the natural shooting style of the show, there is also that added bonus of the ridiculously hot talents of Minka Kelly, Adrian Palicki and Amy Teagarden. So set your DVRs.
