Teenage Goalie Makes Camo Pads

539wTrevor Leahy, a high school senior at the Pingree School in Massachusetts found himself thinking about hockey while he was in class, and soon the thoughts overtook him. Using the skills he learned in a graphic design class, he developed a special design for his goalie pads as the season approached.

Instead of wearing dark blue pads on his legs, thus giving the shooters a contrast to the net to avoid aiming at, Leahy opted for a more sensible approach; he designed his pads to look like the net.

“When the shooter comes down and only has a split second to shoot the puck, they’re looking for net,” said Leahy, “If you put the net on the pad, they’ll shoot at the pad instead of the goal.”

Amazingly, no one has thought to do this yet. When Leahy ordered the customized pads from a pad maker in Ontario, Canada the owner, Darren Stomp was surprised. “It might be the most clever idea,” Stomp said. “I don’t think there’s any question it will work, although to what degree depends on the shooter and the situation.”

As of yet, it’s working pretty darn well, with 2 shutouts. Pingree players say that in practice it has also been difficult to score on Leahy, “When you’re in close and you don’t have a lot of time to think, it does catch your eye, and you do shoot toward it sometimes,” said teammate Matt MacDonald.

Then again, in a recent game against another prep school, the opposing players said the design had no effect, although they did lose 4-3 in overtime.

Leahy, who has applied for a design patent has also used the pads to help himself off the ice too. Writing about the process of development and design as part of his essay for entrance to college, (comparing his idea with Darwinian evolution and animal camouflage) helped get him in, early admission, to the University of New Hampshire.

While Leahy likely won’t make the NHL, he’s hoping that perhaps his pads might, “It would definitely be cool to get it out there and get other guys in the future wearing it,” he said.

All in all, pretty cool, especially from a 17-18 year old kid. However, I will say, Pingree was one of our rivals in high school and I totally dominated them once in tennis. Because you know, I’m a REAL athlete, unlike this bullshit “hockey” sport…

He’s Better Than Anyone on the Lions

Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas got beat earlier in Wednesday’s game by the Maple Leafs’ James Blake and so when Blake came in on another scoring chance, Thomas made sure he’d make the stop this time. Taking a play out of football, Thomas tries to straight up tackle Blake and take him down; while Thomas misses a complete take-down, the maneuver does work, leading to another save for Thomas and helping the Bruins to a 4-3 win.

Goalie Really Knows How to Earn His Money

The New York Islanders made headlines several years ago when they signed goalie Rick DiPietro to a record 15-year, $67.5 million contract. Three years into the deal, and as most prognosticators said then, the deal looks like a giant mistake. After playing in only 5 games this season, DiPietro is unable to continue trying to play and will face season-ending surgery on his injured knee.

Last season also ended early for DiPietro who required hip surgery, seeing his season come to a close in March. With this, the third year of the contract, thus far, the Islanders haven’t been able to keep DiPietro on the ice and playing, making his ridiculous contract look all the more outrageous. Especially when you consider that, while solid, DiPietro has never been a truly elite goaltender who would deserve such a contract…

See Hockey, Win A Million Bucks

In Chicago last night, fans went home saddened by the Blackhawks’ 4-1 loss to the Minnesota Wild, except for one fan. An unidentified fan, through an Illinois lottery promotion walked away from the game with $1 million after the Wild’s Martin Havlat scored exactly at the 10 minute mark of the second period. While the other Chicagoans went home despondent, the man, who requested his name be withheld was full of happiness and also looked a little stunned after the game when he got the chance to meet Havlat.

“At least something good came out of the game,” Havlat told the winner.

During the postgame press conference when the ‘Hawks’ coach Joel Quenneville was informed about the lucky fan he had this understated statement. “He did? Good for him.”

We Won! Want To Do Me?

During the 2006 NHL playoffs Edmonton fans went wild as the Oilers improbably getting all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals. Fans were celebrating, and rioting, in the streets leading to multiple arrests. Amid the hullabaloo was Theresa Simone Schneider, 55, who was arrested for soliciting sex from an undercover police officer. Twice.

Showing how swift the Canadian judicial system moves, the court finally held her hearing where she plead guilty to two counts of communicating for the purpose of prostitution and one count of failing to appear in court. During the proceedings the court heard how Schneider twice made an offer, first on April 13, 2006, and again on May 26, 2006 to perform a sex act for money to an undercover police officer.

Defense lawyer Warren Smith told court his client admits making the illegal propositions, but said she got “carried away” due to the “festive air” on the street as a result of the Oilers unexpected success during the 2006 playoffs.

Smith added Schneider had been drinking at the time.

Judge James Wheatley accepted the guilty plea and went along with a joint submission for a $700 fine.

If there is anything that says true hockey fan more than a 55 year old woman offering to blow you to celebrate the Oilers winning a hockey game, I don’t know what it is. Seeing that the Oilers are currently in 10th place, it seems that Ms. Schneider may need a different team to celebrate during this year’s playoffs.

In Today’s Hockey Highlights

Because it wouldn’t have been the weekend without some fun hockey moments, here’s two clips from action over the weekend. The first is Alexander Semin of the Washington Capitals showing off his bongo moves while fighting with Marc Staal.

And for the second course, how about a dope shootout goal from Red Wings’ center Pavel Datsyuk?

Hockey is Back!

Since it has been nearly 48 hours since I posted any hockey action I figured I was due.

I wish that the other major sports leagues would follow the NHL’s example and have high quality highlights available for free on youtube. It is nice to see a league who won’t shut down fans who are trying to share the awesome moments with one another, unlike certain other unnamed baseball leagues.

So, how about this totally balls out neato goal from Washington Capital Alexander Ovechkin. He totally scores while sliding on his face across the ice; I am unable to do that. Or at least I’ve never been given the chance.

Make sure you are watching it in high quality, another awesome bonus of NHL allowing their clips on youtube, no shitty pixelation!

Who knows, maybe I’ll just become all hockey all the time!

That or old recapping David the Gnome episodes.

Are You Kidding Me!?!

Canadian teenager John Tavares, who terrifyingly was born in 1990, is a member of the Canadian Junior Hockey team currently playing in the World Junior Hockey tournament in Ottawa and is widely anticipated to be the first pick in this year’s NHL draft. He also scored an astoundingly incredible goal during Canada’s first game of the tournament. Make sure you see the high quality version because this will blow you away.

Seriously, that is absolutely AWESOME! It reminds me of the moves from D2 of Dwayne Robertson, played by Ty O’Neal, who interestingly is now a professional rodeo cowboy.

Stick Save, and a BEAUTY

Patrick Elias likes scoring goals, in fact, that’s part of his job. Tim Thomas did his job last night better than Elias.

More Hockey Highlights!

One of my friends, who is basically Canadian but loves the Bruins, and is one of the last people I know who was still interested in hockey turned to me yesterday and said, “Why did no one tell me the Bruins were kicking so much ass this year.” The 2008-9 NHL season folks!

Thanks to the endless publicity machine that is the NHL, somehow, no one knows that thus far the hockey season has actually been pretty good.

And among the class of the league, my Bruins who really are kicking some serious ass. Take Blake Wheeler in yesterday’s game against the St. Louis Blues. My man Wheeler is so good he takes on 5 Blues and walks away with a damn pretty goal. Don’t believe me? I have video proof!

Oh yeah, and the Bruins were playing short-handed at the time.

Zamboni Down!

As Chicago gears up for the upcoming Blackhawks/Red Wings outdoor game at Wrigley Field, all the necessary preparations are being made. For instance, what’s a hockey game without a zamboni? Of course, this being Chicago and Wrigley Field, nothing comes easy. I’d be concerned about the Blackhawks if I were one of their fans after seeing this video. The Cubs have gone 100 years sans championship, the Blackhawks have already gone since 1961 since winning one, I’d be staying away from EVERYTHING Cubs. At least the White Sox have won recently…

Like Looking at Car Accidents?

The economy has destroyed newspapers, major newspapers in major markets are up for sale, the Chicago Tribune filed for bankruptcy yesterday, and based on the way the mainstream media has ignored the internet markets, it is little wonder. However, for one brief shining moment a newspaper did something wonderful, the NY Daily News features a gallery today of some of the finest, horrific sports injuries ever. Finally, a story I care about!

Check out the full gallery here, some of the images are gruesome, others are merely after the fact, but all are enjoyable, providing you aren’t the one being hurt.

Alabama receiver Tyrone Prothro has his leg snapped during a 2005 game.
