Save the Flowers, Save the World

Normally the only thing that stops a lacrosse game from happening is a totally sweet Coldplay concert, but in Pittsburgh, Franklin Park, a veritable hot spot for white dudes with sticks something else is gumming up the works. The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources informed the manager of the park that a rare blue buttercup flower may be growing in the area of the field.

There is no evidence the plant is growing anywhere on or near the land, said borough Manager Ambrose Rocca. However, the borough will probably have to hire a botanist to confirm the flower, which is listed as “critically imperiled” in Pennsylvania, is nowhere to be found.

No evidence, no flowers found, but they are going to search for it and delay building the field for at least a year. That’s some fine planning there.

Behind the Scenes at MLB Network

This past Monday, loyal reader and regular Slanchreport commenter Youppi got to visit the sets of the brand new MLB network in Secaucus, NJ as part of his job. In fact, when you watch the MLB network and see the big photos of players floating on screens in the background behind the main desk, Youppi picked them out. So, yeah, I got friends in high places.

This LeBron Guy is Pretty Good

During last night’s Cavaliers/Raptors game LeBron James scored 33 points, pushing his NBA total over 12,000 points, making him the youngest and fastest to ever reach that point, beating Kobe Bryant by a YEAR! Wow.

“He’s still going to get better,” Cavs coach Mike Brown said. “That’s the scary thing.”

Yeah it is. They may need to create a whole new record book just for LeBron…

All Hockey ALL the Time

Boom!

Here’s LA’s Denis Gauthier knocking the shit out of Josh Gorges, I’d say he seems a little dazed when he gets back on his feet…

This Ripken Ain’t Tacky

With the economy in the tank, everyone in America has a bit more (or too much) free time. For example, here is a guy who took 10,115 thumbtacks and made an incredibly realistic portrait of Cal Ripken. The overall project took 30 hours and all those thumbtacks cost $400, I’d say it was well worth it. Enjoy!

Kiss Me!

kiss-me-in-3d1

Everyone and their mother had a 3d commercial during the Super Bowl, particularly the Sobe lizard, which apparently people were clamoring for, since NBC announced the upcoming commercial like it was actually something that mattered.

Since I still have my 3d glasses I was excited to see this website where I get to kiss a girl in 3d.

It’s a first for me.

Not kissing a girl, that’s like a third or fourth for me…

Check it out yourself, even if you don’t have 3d glasses, you can still enjoy virtually kissing a girl or a guy. Fun!

From the basketball hotbed that is Idaho comes a pretty nice 75 footer to win the game for North Idaho College over South Idaho College. I’m more astonished that both teams fielded all-black lineups, I had no idea there were that many black people in Idaho.

Don’t Call it a Comeback

Got 8 minutes to burn? Check out this incredibly dope Go-Kart track in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin where a helmet-cammed driver goes from 20th to 1st.

What, No Hair Helmets?

I could have just combined this with the Canadiens awful jerseys, but I actually LIKE this idea so it gets its own post. As ever, the world of minor league sports continues to entertain with their creative and fun promotional evenings, this time courtesy of Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL.

The home Wranglers dressed in prison stripe uniforms, their opponents, the Bakersfield Condors dressed in prison orange jumpsuits and even the refs got involved dressing in warden uniforms, all to celebrate “Governor Rod Blagojevich Prison Uniform Night.” To add to the fun of the evening, the Wranglers even arranged for a judge (who vaguely looks like Kelsey Grammar) to sit rink side, powdered wig and all. I never knew you could get the refs to dress up for retro nights too, but I like it.

How Tough are You?

If running through fire after having swum through freezing cold waters, running a cross-country race and going through a brutally difficult obstacle course in thick mud and the chilly English countryside sounds like a fun time to you, then the 23rd annual Tough Guy Challenge is just right for you.

Held on Sunday at the South Perton Farm in Wolverhampton, England, it featured competitors from 25 countries, and nearly 600 cases of hypothermia, including the eventual champion, James Appleton. There were 21 different obstacles along the way for the harsh race, whose own website says, “The event is uniquely fear ridden and you need to be fit in both body and spirit to survive the ordeal.” Don’t worry, these people aren’t putting themselves through a crazy endurance test for nothing, the challege is for charity with the money going to the Mr. Mouse Farm for Unfortunates, which looks after hundreds of retired horses and provides jobs to young offenders. So there’s that too.

Now, enjoy some photos!

The Slanch Report has started an online petition asking the MLB Network to air the Dock Ellis no-hitter he threw on June 12, 1970 against the San Diego Padres. The moment was a seminal piece of baseball history and is certainly worthy of being rerun.

Please join us in this cause and sign the petition below so we can all share in this special and fantastic moment of baseball history. THANKS!
