Take a Look at the Man in the Mirror

Bakersfield Condors - Michael Jackson JerseysJust like it is in baseball’s lower levels, minor league hockey teams need an extra hook to bring in the crowds, usually leading to bizarre jersey’s (here and here) or other outlandish promotions (here and here), the crazy new one of the moment this week is from the Bakersfield Condors who are planning to honor Michael Jackson at their game tonight against the Utah Grizzlies.

Bakersfield Condors - White GloveThe Jackson-themed uniforms are pretty awful, but the really terrible part of their promotion will be the single white glove that each player will wear. The promotion will also feature an auction and a raffle and the uniforms will be auctioned┬áto benefit the Children’s Miracle Network.

If your name is Michael Jackson or Billie Jean you’ll also get free admission to the game┬áso, at least there’s that.

Watch Out for When Chewie Gets the Munchies for Scooby Snacks

I don’t know where this video is from, it appears to be from one of the Red Sox minor league affiliates, but which one is a mystery to me. Not as much a mind-boggler as why Chewbacca is riding around with the gang from Scooby Doo in the Mystery Machine, but then, what do I know, I’m just a lowly blogger…

What, No Hair Helmets?

I could have just combined this with the Canadiens awful jerseys, but I actually LIKE this idea so it gets its own post. As ever, the world of minor league sports continues to entertain with their creative and fun promotional evenings, this time courtesy of Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL.

The home Wranglers dressed in prison stripe uniforms, their opponents, the Bakersfield Condors dressed in prison orange jumpsuits and even the refs got involved dressing in warden uniforms, all to celebrate “Governor Rod Blagojevich Prison Uniform Night.” To add to the fun of the evening, the Wranglers even arranged for a judge (who vaguely looks like Kelsey Grammar) to sit rink side, powdered wig and all. I never knew you could get the refs to dress up for retro nights too, but I like it.

The Slanch Report has started an online petition asking the MLB Network to air the Dock Ellis no-hitter he threw on June 12, 1970 against the San Diego Padres. The moment was a seminal piece of baseball history and is certainly worthy of being rerun.

Please join us in this cause and sign the petition below so we can all share in this special and fantastic moment of baseball history. THANKS!
