Detroit Beats Green Bay in Popularity Contest

A poll of NFL players conducted by Sports Illustrated asked which NFL team they’d least like to play for; incredibly, despite the fact that the Lions have lost 33 of their last 42 games they weren’t the least popular team.

From the 296 players asked, more players would rather ply their trade for the Lions than for Green Bay, an actual winning franchise. In no big surprise, the largest percentage (20%) responded that they would least like playing for the Oakland Raiders, followed by Buffalo at 14%, Green Bay at 13%, Detroit with 12% and Cleveland, as ever, bringing up the rear with 7%.

I can see not wanting to play for the shitacular franchises, that’s clear to me, but not wanting to play in Green Bay? Is Wisconsin THAT bad… hmm. Now that I think about it… Even still, since when is DETROIT better than Green Bay in anything?

What, No More Football Phones?

madden-10-cover-368x500Having spent several years working in the magazine industry I can tell you with confidence that the world of subscription print media is crumbling. In order to try and retain subscribers — and draw in new ones — magazines need to get more creative. So, instead of giving away a crappy fleece blanket or a football flip phone, Sports Illustrated has moved into the 21st century and is now featuring something actually worth getting; a brand new copy of Madden ’10 for the system of your choice.

For a $50 subscription you get 28 weeks of the magazine PLUS  the game AND a bonus NFL Films DVD; considering that the game itself costs like $60 you’re already saving money. If you decide to cancel the subscription early you can only get a full refund if you return both the game and the DVD, if you decide to keep the game SI keeps $26. Even still, if you were going to buy the game anyways you save a little loot, and in this economy, that’s not so bad…

SI Has More than Just Sports to Offer

sicomIf you’re an iPhone user and you decide to browse Sports Illustrated’s site you might find that they are offering more than just sports for you. The gents over at SFT Sports noticed that when you load up SI’s page, they don’t just offer Breaking News and Scores, but also, Daily Anal! And really, who doesn’t want that while you’re checking last night’s box scores.

Wait a minute…Daily Anal, box scores, are we sure SI ISN’T running a hardcore smut operation as well?

The Year in Pictures

As everyone gears up for the end of the year and goes on autopilot, we see an constant stream of end-of-the-year wrap ups and such, most of which are useless and repetitive. Sports Illustrated posted a pretty nice gallery of some of the greatest photos from the year though, which I’m sure we’ll see 500 times elsewhere, but I saw this one first, so everyone else is following off that one, to me.

Anyhoo, there are some pretty sweet photos in the gallery, which is located here, and I recommend you check it out when you get a chance. To save some time, I’m posting my favorite ones here. Smooches!

The Slanch Report has started an online petition asking the MLB Network to air the Dock Ellis no-hitter he threw on June 12, 1970 against the San Diego Padres. The moment was a seminal piece of baseball history and is certainly worthy of being rerun.

Please join us in this cause and sign the petition below so we can all share in this special and fantastic moment of baseball history. THANKS!
