Beckham Vs. Bush, Who Ya Got?

As part of a documentary entitled “David Beckham: New Beginnings” from when David Beckham made his MLS debut, Reggie Bush of the New Orleans Saints got together with the futbol star. While this isn’t new, it’s from 2007, it’s still pretty amusing and pretty awesome. For one thing, I’ve never seen anyone juggle a football like Beckham can. And who knew Reggie Bush has a future career in placekicking!

When Birds Attack

As part of the festivities for opening day, The Seattle Sounders of the MLS were initially planning on releasing some doves that were supposed to fly around the stadium. Unfortunately for the team, owned in part by comedian Drew Carey, three hawks swooped down and tore the doves to shreds. One of the hawks reportedly dropped one of the dove carcasses into the stands before diving back down for some more.

The club has since changed their opening ceremonies.

Another Goalie Goal

Danny Cepero is brand new to MLS, making his debut with the NY/NJ Red Bulls in goal on Saturday. And he faced quite the challenge, with the highest scoring team in the league opposing him in the Columbus Crew. For the 23 year old from Long Island, his debut will be forever burned in his memory. That’s because, en route to a 3-1 victory Cepero made MLS history. Thrust into a starting position after starting goalie Jon Conway was suspended for 10 games for using performance enhancing drugs, Cepero struck a penalty kick 81 yards to score, becoming the first MLS goalkeeper to score a goal. Awesome.

Bailouts Run in His Blood

Merritt Paulson is the 28 year old co-owner of the Portland Beavers, the Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres and he’s working very hard to try and bring an MLS franchise to the Portland area. In order to do that, he wants to renovate the stadium where the Beavers play and build a new stadium for them elsewhere in the city. Paulson is looking for $85 million from the city for renovations while he’s willing to pony up $40 million for the soccer franchise itself. MLS has promised the city a team by 2011 if they built a soccer-specific stadium, hence the renovations, but while some people are excited others, like Jody Wiser of Tax Fairness Oregon feel differently. “My personal feeling is if Merritt Paulson wants a team he should buy some land and build the stadium. That’s his job as a business owner. It’s not the job of the grocery store clerk.”

Meanwhile, the price tag keeps climbing. In September Paulson said it would take $75 million and today it’s 85. But for Paulson, son of current Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson (who is the other co-owner of the Beavers) the government’s money is seen as just another ATM for him to use. After all, if AIG and all of his dad’s cronies on Wall Street can get some government coin, why not him!

Don’t worry though, the new Mayor-Elect Sam Adams is on the scene and ready to help provide leadership; also, 2 kegs of the fall seasonal ale. Continue reading ‘Bailouts Run in His Blood’

Flipping Over Soccer

Fabian Espindola is a striker for Real Salt Lake of the MLS, but I’m sure I didn’t need to tell you that, I mean, it IS a major sports league in the US… Anyways, in a game against the Los Angeles Galaxy the other day during the 6th minute Espindola headed a ball into the net for an apparent goal. Espindola then ran to midfield and did his customary backflip to celebrate. Unfortunately, he didn’t quite nail that landing, instead fracturing his leg. After the game, a contrite Espindola had this to say, “I’m embarassed, I’m never going to do that again. I don’t know what happened. I’ve done it a million times. If I would have known I never would have done it.” Then to add insult, the referee disallowed the goal.

Later in the game, because Espindola wasn’t feeling terrible enough, after scoring a goal for the Galaxy, LA midfielder Bryan Jordan executed his own flip, landing it perfectly.
Espindola, who only just returned last week from another injury that had sidelined him since May 31 is expected to miss another 6 weeks.

The Slanch Report has started an online petition asking the MLB Network to air the Dock Ellis no-hitter he threw on June 12, 1970 against the San Diego Padres. The moment was a seminal piece of baseball history and is certainly worthy of being rerun.

Please join us in this cause and sign the petition below so we can all share in this special and fantastic moment of baseball history. THANKS!
