Why America Loves Ken Griffey

beltreIt took some prodding — not in that way — from manager Don Wakamatsu but Mariners third baseman Adrian Beltre finally agreed to wear a cup when he plays in the field. Despite a BLEEDING TESTICLE from taking a grounder off the junk, Beltre still wasn’t convinced that the cup was worthwhile.

“Adrian will wear a cup tonight,” Wakamatsu said before Tuesday’s game.

In a moment of pure comic genius, teammate Ken Griffey Jr. arranged to have Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” play when Adrian strode up to the plate for his first at-bat.

Brilliant.

Two Words You Never Want to Hear: Bleeding Testicle

Beltre14_173801gm-aAdrian Beltre is in his free agent year and his expected contract push was just starting to heat up when his season was tragically derailed. In Wednesday’s game against the White Sox, Beltre took a one-hopper straight into his junk.

Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu after the game told reporters that Beltre is out indefinitely and may require surgery due to BLEEDING inside his testicle.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Terrifying.

Beltre was “walking stiffly with his legs far apart” before yesterday’s game with the Yankees, which he obviously didn’t participate in.

“[The trainers] don’t want him doing anything, just sitting and resting and icing,” Wakamatsu said, “They say if it’s a major surgery it could be at least a month, maybe more, so there’s a chance of that. … It’s healing already, it’s just a matter of whether they’re going to have to go in and fix it surgically. We’ll know shortly.”

Beltre told reporters in 2008 that he doesn’t wear a protective cup when he plays. “I hear that a lot, that I’m crazy, stupid. [The other players] might be right. There is some stupidity to it.”

And now he has a bleeding testicle. Ow. OW OW OW OW OW OW.

Not the Danger I’d Expect from the Pfister

Copy of ghostsThe Florida Marlins finished out their series against the Milwaukee Brewers yesterday, and at least a couple players couldn’t be happier to get out of the Brew City. At least two pairs of Marlins players were sharing rooms at their hotel because of their fear of ghosts. It seems that the Marlins are staying at the Pfister Hotel in downtown Milwaukee, the high class hotel is also famous for ghost sightings and other paranormal activity. Reportedly, the most popular sighting is of the hotel’s founder, Charles Pfister overlooking the lobby from the grand staircase.

The Marlins’ Josh Johnson and Dan Meyer had separate but adjoining rooms. “Every time there was a noise, JJ would yell, ‘It’s the ghosts,'” Meyer said.

“I heard a couple of noises,” Chris Volstad said with a laugh, “but I just closed my eyes.”

The Marlins aren’t the only ones to experience something scary while staying at the lovely Pfister. When he was with the Dodgers, Adrian Beltre reportedly was so scared he would sleep with a baseball bat in his bed just in case a specter came after him (the Dodgers no longer stay at the Pfister.) Last June the Twins’ Carlos Gomez got scared when his iPod, sitting on a table kept vibrating, despite Gomez turning it off several times. Sounds SPOOKY!

The players should be thankful that the ghosts of the Pfister don’t do something much much worse.
