Wherein I Take a Quote Out of Context and Make it Sound More Sexual

maria-sharapova-modeling-pictures-2ESPN the Magazine — or as I call it, that thing ESPN sends me every month to throw out — had tennis star Maria Sharapova guest edit their magazine for the June 26th issue. As part of the exercise they asked her some questions about what she would do to make the tennis world better.

Among her answers was this one that I think most fans of women’s tennis would be in favor of: “Athletes should play au naturel.”

Agreed. I’m glad she was the one to say it, because no one seems to be listening to me…

Anna Kournikova is Always In Style

Anna Kournikova may not be playing competitive tennis anymore but that doesn’t mean she isn’t on our minds. Wimbledon will be starting up again soon and so it is only appropriate to showcase these new photos of Anna from In Style. Enjoy!

Smaller, Faster, Stronger But Less Buoyant

6e4ed1c1ac91bfbac425aab6fbb8c26b_simona halep 10Remember Simona Halep, the 17 year old Romanian tennis player who featured some — uh, I do I say this classily — oversized funbags? (ed. You blew it) Well, sad news for her many new fans and for the ratings for women’s tennis, she’s seriously considering a breast reduction. According to ProSport.Ro and some poor translation:

I do not believe that physical appearance has an effect on performance, so I help with anything in the sport. My mind bust when for me to go and even if the land would not be sporting, I would have felt very good. Inconvenience me, it’s very hard with them. It’s a weight in addition to confound me speed response. I can not go on very well. Shoot me down. Nothing in life is not like me even though sport was not all I was doing surgery, revealing Halep. Surgical intervention should take place last year, but probably will use it in autumn, because the postponement might cause problems in the column.

Makes perfect sense to me. While I’m sure there will be many heavy breathing fans who will be disappointed, I’d like to posit this, a boob reduction doesn’t mean she’s going to from these, to mosquito bites, and in the long run, she really isn’t that hot anyways. Besides, isn’t woman’s tennis all about the TENNIS; that’s why I watch…

But then, I’m a much more enlightened kind of guy.

I Love You, Man

Sports bring people together, fans and players both. While the competition on the field/court/whatever may be fierce, when the final whistle blows or the last run crosses the plate the players just become people once more. This slideshow, assembled by WCCO in Minnesota/St Paul features some of the finest moments of athletes hugging one another, and I’ll be honest, most of them look like they are about to kiss. It’s pretty exciting.

Wait, She ISN’T Smuggling Tennis Balls?

Simona Halep is a 17 year old Romanian young woman who is also the current Junior French Open Champion. Her masterful work on the court baits many tennis afficionados into becoming fans of her…work.

A Lot Can Happen in an Instant

My only previous interaction with Novak Djokovic was when Olympic hottie Leryn Franco was spotted canoodling with the tennis star after the Olympics, but this new commercial makes me kinda like him. Of course, I’m still upset he got with the uber-hot javelinist, but these things happen…

Anna Kournikova Tries a Triathlon

Since retiring from tennis full-time, Anna Kournikova has found other ways to keep busy; for instance competing in the Second Annual Nautica South Beach Triathlon, which helps to raise money for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Isn’t that nice! Also, she wears spandex to do it. Isn’t that even nicer!

The Newspaper Industry Knows the News

When I see hard-hitting news exposés like this, I find it hard to believe the newspaper industry is struggling; The Daily Mail, the British tabloid paper had this breaking news story today, “Serena Williams looks buoyant in Miami… but still can’t find a pair of bikini bottoms to fit.” I don’t know how I would have gotten through my day without this kind of information. Of course, since so many people today learn visually, they made sure to add plenty of photographs so we simple-folk could understand. Thanks Daily Mail, keep doing the important stories like these, I’m sure your corporate bottom line will have no problems if you do.

Also, I think Serena’s thighs could crush my head like a grape…

This Man Hates the Ground!

The unfortunate thing about being angry in tennis is that the most of the ways to express it involve just smashing your racket to pieces, and that’s cool initially, but then you’re just some dude in white shorts carrying a broken racket over to your gym bag. Any thoughts on this Mr. Federer?

I Bet He Yelled a Lot

Along with a number of other rich folk, tennis legend John McEnroe found out that they were duped by art dealer Lawrence Salander, who pulled off his own version of an $88 million art Ponzi scheme.

Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau at a press conference said, “He sold artwork not owned by him and kept the money and lured investment money in fraudulent investment opportunities.”  Salander used the money to fund “an extravagant lifestyle” of lavish parties and private jets, Morgenthau added.

I can imagine that McEnroe, best known for his tantrums on the courts and fights with line judges, took the entire thing in stride, probably taking it very calmly and with a measured and calculated response. Or about 15,000 F-bombs and “motherfuckers.”

Some of the details of the alleged scheme:

Authorities have identified 26 victims of Salander’s scheme, including McEnroe, who lost $2 million after investing a half share in two paintings, Arshile Gorky’s “Pirate I and II.” The share in the paintings was sold at the same time to another collector, and McEnroe never recouped the money, authorities said…

Renaissance Art Investors, a company focused on investment in old master paintings, lost $45 million in the scheme, authorities said.

Earl Davis, the son of American abstract painter Stuart Davis, lost $6.7 million, authorities said, while Bank of America lost $2 million after Salander lied about paintings he owned to secure a loan.

Hester Diamond, the widow of late renowned New York art dealer Harold Diamond and mother of Beastie Boys’ Mike D, lost $6 million, authorities said.

I wonder if McEnroe thinks Salander needs to go to The CHAIR

That’s Not a Regulation Court

In Miami, in an effort to promote the Sony Ericsson Open which begins tomorrow, Venus Williams and Andy Murray headed out to the streets. Getting on top of top specially modified cars, the two played an “impromptu” match, if a publicity stunt can be referred to as “impromptu”… No word on if the cars actually were driving around too or not with the tennis stars on top, but I for one doubt it. Meaning this promotion is lame and not dangerous enough; now, do this on the highway and I’ll be impressed.
