Rivals Work Together to Score a Touchdown

Hey, I’m all for snark and being an ass, but this is just an awesome story.

MATT_SP_091709_DRE_0557F_09-18-2009_821BJV4M_embedded_prod_affiliate_81Matt Zeisel is on his high school’s freshman football team but doesn’t usually get in to the games. However, he’s always near the coach, letting him know he’s available. With 10 seconds left in his team’s most recent game, down 46-0, coach Dan McCamy decided it was time for Matt — who has Down’s Syndrome — to make his season debut.

He told an assistant coach to get their team ready for the “Matt play” and then ran to the other team’s sideline.

“I’ve got a special situation,” McCamy remembers telling the opposing defensive coach David McEnaney. “I know you guys want to get a shutout. Most teams would want a shutout, but in this situation I want to know if maybe you can let one of my guys run in for a touchdown.”

“[The other] players, they didn’t hesitate at all,” McEnaney said. “They jumped right on board.”

The ball was snapped, Matt started off on a sweep play and took off; the defense knew to avoid contact but tried to make the play look as real as possible. 60 yards later, with his coach running alongside him on the sideline urging him on, Matt was in the end zone with his first touch of the season, and a pretty decent per-carry average.

“It’s just amazing how one play can mean so much to one kid and then to a team and then to a community,” McCamy said Thursday. “And now it’s spread not just to the community of St. Joseph, but now it’s spread across the region. How something so simple can impact so many — to me, that’s the amazing part about it.”

Matt’s dad, Mike, who has coached the basketball team for 19 years said, “It was just a good thing to see people realize that the value of winning is not (as) important as it is to participate and enjoy the game.”

The only bad part of this story, Matt’s mom was unfortunately not at the game, not expecting him to get in at all, and so missed seeing it live. But thankfully Mike was there and it was videotaped for her and their family to remember forever.

“It’s not necessarily about winning or losing,” said McCamy, “Obviously up in Maryville we lost the game. The end result, we lost the game, but when we went away, we were all kind of winners.

“Some of them get it now, but in due time all these kids who were a part of it will have a better understanding. When they grow up and they get older, everybody will realize the impact that maybe that play (has) had — not just on that kid’s life, because Matt will remember that forever — but on some of these other kids and what they may have been a part of.”

Awesome.

Bad Things Come in Threes

Brandon Coppola is a triplet, and all three of the brothers play(ed) football for St. John’s Prep on the North Shore of Massachusetts. Last season during a JV game Brandon suffered a cervical fracture, which has nothing to do with female parts; it’s a bad spinal injury. Totally unfortunate and sad.

On September 4th Brandon’s brother, Jared, suffered a cervical fracture after tackling a wide receiver in a scrimmage. Jared currently has feeling but no movement in his extremities. Totally unfortunate and sad.

The remaining triplet, Tyler is wearing his brother’s uniform number this season in tribute. They also have an older brother who plays at the University of New Hampshire. Um. What!?!

While I absolutely feel for the kid and his family, here’s a question; one son gets a spinal injury, sure that’s random, two get the same injury and you LET THE THIRD KEEP PLAYING? How can you allow your third son to keep playing when his brothers have had horrific life-changing accidents? I simply don’t get it. Hey guys, try tennis maybe? I’m not superstitious or nothing, but don’t things always come in threes? Aren’t they TRIPLETS, am I the only one who thinks this could end badly? I certainly don’t want it to, but c’mon, take these kids off the football field.

Well, At Least He Has Perspective

Bengals attention-whore receiver Chad Johnson is an avid Twitterer, which makes sense, seeing as the service appeals to the lowest brain functions. Due to new rules from the NFL Commissioner’s office, players are now limited in what they are allowed to say and do on various websites.

In this clip from HBO’s Hard Knocks Chad shows that he is mature and respects the Commish’s decisions. He also says that “losing my Twitter and Ustream is just as tough as losing my johnson.”

Now, I’m unsure if he means losing his penis or losing the Johnson from his last name, but since the latter was of his own attention-whoring volition, I’m going to assume he considers his Twitter account to be the same as his penis. In which case, Goodell did a good thing in getting Chad to take his penis off the internet. Penis.

Dunta Robinson Wants to Get Paid

nfl_a_robinson_195Houston Texan cornerback Dunta Robinson is on the verge of poverty; making a mere guaranteed $9.957 million this season how can he reasonably be expected to survive on such a pittance?

Recognizing his hardships, Dunta took to his shoes to make a statement, writing on his cleats a message to team GM Rick Smith: “Pay me Rick.”

Smith offered a different solution, “Pay ME Dunta,” fining him for conduct detrimental to the team.

“I got here today, and it was in my locker,” Robinson said,  “I knew it was coming because Rick told me [Monday] I was going to get fined.  That’s okay.  I’ve put it behind me.  I’ve moved on.  I’m focused on the Titans.”

The fun won’t end there as the No-Fun-League offices are likely to hand down another fine for Dunta for violating the uniform guidelines.

Honesty Isn’t Always the Best Policy

steve-smith-angrySteve Smith is a star receiver for the Carolina Panthers and isn’t known for being a wall-flower. Just last season he broke a teammate’s jaw in practice for talking smack.

Amidst his starting QB throwing 4 interceptions, Smith sat down with Jake Delhomme while wearing a wire. As the quarterback you’re supposed to be in control, instead Delhomme apologizes to Smith for his errant throws, and Smith has a strange response.

“I never really liked you as a quarterback. ” Smith tells him, “But as a person . . . I love you as a person.”

How touching!

The best part is that Delhomme just sat there and took it. What a leader!

League Won’t Let Albino Kid Wear Tinted Shield Just Cuz

620wtmj_091609cooneyfootballGraham Bartunek played football for several years in Kansas City without a problem but when his family moved to Oconomowoc, Wisconsin the Parks and Recreation Department started giving him fits. The 12-year-old has albinism which also has made him partially blind and makes it dangerous for him to be in direct sunlight. Where his old league allowed him to wear a tinted face shield, the new one is refusing to allow it.

“I was really mad and upset because the face shield really helps me and makes it hard to play without it,” Graham said.

The officials say that the shield violates federal safety rules which require a player’s eyes to be showing. However, like in the NFL, with a doctor’s note justifying it it shouldn’t be an issue.

“I just don’t understand why they won’t allow it. It’s beyond me,” Graham’s father Paul said. “The face shields are allowed in football. The NFL allows them. We have a doctor’s note to justify the need. It’s about vision. It’s about sun exposure,” Paul said. “He’s very sensitive to the sun, and we’re looking to get some additional protection. A clear visor is a legal device. We’re just asking for a reasonable accommodation to add a tint to a legal device.”

Currently Graham has been wearing sunglasses during the games, but they fall off constantly and don’t protect his skin which is just as big an issue as his eyes. But, the young lad has had a good attitude throughout insisting that he will do whatever he has to in order to stay on the team and the field.

“The rule book clearly states that there can be reasonable exceptions made for student athletes with disabilities.” Paul said, “I asked [the officials], ‘what would be more reasonable to ask for?'”

Hey, Oconomowoc stop being dicks to a 12-year-old! The kid just wants to play the game and should be able to do so; so he wears a tinted shield, big deal, oh is it better instead that he’s in pain and danger by not wearing it? Arg, I can’t stand stupid people.

Chicago Not Being Very Sweet to Sweetness

They used to call him Sweetness, but now the Chicago Parks District are being quite sour towards Walter Payton. Ten years after he died, his friends and family have been trying to get a statue of Payton outside Soldier Field to no avail.

According to the Paytons, park officials claim the area around Soldier Field is solely to serve as a memorial to war veterans. The parks officials also are concerned for other Bears Hall of Famers who don’t have statues of their own outside the stadium and that their feelings might be hurt.

As a compromise, the parks department is willing to put the Payton statue in any other Chicago Park — Go for Wrigley!

The Bears are interested in having the statue but since the parks department oversees Soldier Field and the ground surrounding it, the decision is ultimately up to them. Regardless, the family is going ahead with the statue which is being constructed in Sarah Palin’s hometown of Wasilla, Alaska by sculptor Stan Watts and intend to unveil it and then donate it to the city on November 7.

It Appears America Was Ready for Football

NielsensThe Nielsen’s ratings from last week are out and amongst adults aged 18-49 football reigns supreme. The top 6 slots were all football with NBC’s Sunday and Thursday broadcasts taking the top slots; Hell’s Kitchen took 7th.

The only question I have is how King of the Hill managed to sneak into the top ten.

Buffalo Fans Wreck Players Lawn in Revenge

0721051gold1

As if things weren’t bad enough for Leodis McKelvin, after losing a fumble directly leading to the Patriots scoring the winning touchdown, when he returned to his home Tuesday in suburban Buffalo he found it vandalized by unhappy fans. On his lawn they spray-painted an obscenity, a giant phallus and the final score for the game 25-24.

Bills linebacker Kawika Mitchell was not amused and on his Twitter wrote: “W/ all the safety issues n the NFL its not funny at all. We have Fam at our homes to protect. If u show ur face on my prop Ill make sure I do everythin to keep my Fam safe.”

“Its my job to protect my home as it is the job of all home owners. Dont push the limit,” Mitchell wrote.

C’mon Bills fans, you know better than this. It’s a long season, if you’re going to vandalize the players homes after EVERY loss local hardware stores in the Buffalo area are going to run out of spray-paint very quickly. Besides, you’re taking spray-paint away from teenagers who want to do REAL vandalism.

And huffers, won’t anyone think of the huffers?!!?

They Know My Name!

Last night’s Patriots game didn’t go the way I expected it, but hey, who cares, a win is a win. Besides the most imp0rtant thing was the return of Tom Brady who, while shaky, did what he does best and told his teammates with 5 minutes left in the game exactly what he was going to do to get them their two scores. Then he did it!

Anyhoo, the Patriots’ friends at Gillete made this video to celebrate the 50th year of team. As someone who love LOVES Cheers there’s no way I could pass this one up.

My favorite part is the John Ratzenberger moment with the catatonic woman sitting next to him; could she possibly be more lifeless?

As someone who recently rewatched all of Cheers in order, if you haven’t watched much of the show you should get off your ass and do so beause it’s hilarious and holds up EXTREMELY well.

Rode Hard and Put Away Wet

The University of Virginia Cavaliers took to their home field this past weekend, prior to kickoff as the team was getting ready to run out, first came the team mascot, a fabulously dressed Cavalier on a horse. This man rode his steed hard, apparently TOO hard because it doesn’t quite go how he expected.

The NFL is Back and Spectacular!

With a full slate of games on yesterday, the opportunity for some incredible football plays was out there. Miami’s Greg Camarillo and Denver’s Brandon Stokely provided the two best of the day. First there’s Camarillo’s circus catch where he isn’t able to initially corral the ball but stays concentrated and never lets it hit the ground.

Then, Brandon Stokely somehow, someway is in the perfect position to scoop up a tipped pass and take it to the house, scoring the game-winning touchdown for his Broncos. Even better, you get Gus Johnson on the call which means the excitement level automatically gets jacked up about 15 times.
