Rangers’ Owner Defaults on Bank Loans

84579878It must be tough being Texas Rangers and Dallas Stars owner Tom Hicks, after all, he is only the 701st richest person in the world and that type of thing can really stick in your craw. So, maybe that’s the reason why his holding company, which controls the Rangers and Stars has defaulted on loans totaling $525 million.

Hicks insists the move was deliberate, as a business strategy to get the banks to change the lending agreements and provide access to reserve accounts and a revolving line of credit. He also said that the whole thing is a “nonevent for the teams, fans, sponsors and vendors.” Of course, this news comes after rumors that Hicks has been actively seeking selling as much as a 49% minority stake in both teams. “We are simply asking the lenders to be reasonable. “Hicks said in an issued statement, “They need to understand that these important assets must be managed with long-term perspective and a commitment to winning.” That’s an interesting strategy, one the Rangers have eschewed since about 1999…

Edmonton Needs New Entertainment Options

With the nightlife scene stagnant in Edmonton, fans organized a rally pleading for Oilers coach Craig MacTavish’s dismissal. Over 8,800 people belong to the group on Facebook, but when media first showed up for the rally it numbered a mere 10 people. Fans are upset that the team has lost 6 of their last 7, pushing their already precarious playoff hopes further away. MacTavish’s job for now though, is safe, team owner Darly Katz delivered the clearest possible message of confidence; he sent a text message to the Bob Stauffer, the team’s radio analyst to give to MacTavish reading “MacT is not going anywhere.”

I feel warm and tingly.

Sean Avery, Always Full of Class

Sean Avery is back in Gotham and he obviously grew as a person since his suspension and dismissal from the Stars. Case in point, when the Bruins were in town Saturday, Avery went out of his way to express a neighborly congratulations to  goalie Tim Thomas on his new contract extension. For some crazy reason, Thomas freaks out and goes nuts and attacks Avery and then it becomes a full-on melee. It’s so nice to see people better themselves, well done Sean.

Nice Shots!

Since I can’t seem to stop posting soccer and hockey videos today, here’s another post with two pretty awesome shots one from each sport.

The first features Linus Omark a young Swedish forward playing in a friendly between his country and Switzerland. The game went into a shootout and this is one of the prettiest, sweetest shootout goals I’ve ever seen. Enjoy!

Then, here is an excellent long-range shot from the soccer world. Eat your heart out Beckham.

I Got Bruins Fever

Out of all the young Bruins, Milan Lucic is my favorite, he plays like a young Cam Neely and has a mean-streak that I really appreciate. While the NHL governors are considering fighting, I’m glad it’s still part of the game and clearly the crowd is too; look how quickly everyone stands up to get a better view of Lucic giving Josef Melichar of the Tampa Bay Lightning his comeuppance for a high hit.

And via Deadspin comes this hilarious video from AFTER the game of a girl valiantly trying to to make her way back UP the escalator as everyone else tries to get out of the Garden.

The Return of the Whale!

When the Hartford Whalers moved it was a sad day; not only did the Whale leave behind a loyal fan base but one of the absolutely greatest team fight songs in the history of sports (below). While the team moved on to become the Carolina Hurricanes, some fans never did. However, this auction, perfectly situated for Easter, is one fan’s attempt to move beyond the past.

For a limited time only, (auction ends Saturday) you could finally become the owner of the autographs of the entire 1982-1983 Hartford Whalers on different colored wooden eggs. Finally!

Right now the auction is a STEAL at only $9.99, so get your bids in now.

bpby93qbmkkgrhgoh-dwejlllzbowbjzpprk1_12Included in the autographs is an egg from Mr. Hockey himself, Gordie Howe, who plied his trade briefly for the Whale as well as such luminaries as:

  • Russ Anderson
  • Ron Francis
  • Pierre Lacroix
  • Paul Lawless
  • Doug Sulliman
  • Mike Veisor
  • Chuck Kaiton – Hartford Whalers Radio
  • Greg A. Adams
  • Ed Hospodar
  • Chris Kotsopoulos
  • Pierre Lacroix
  • Jack McIlhargey
  • Warren Miller
  • Mark Renaud
  • Doug Sulliman
  • Chuck Kaiton – Hartford Whalers Radio
  • Ed Hospodar
  • Mike McDougall
  • Bob Sullivan
  • Risto Siltanen
  • Mike Vellucci
  • Jack McIlhargey and Chris Kotsopoulos on same egg

It Was Definitely Cold On the Ice

St. Patrick’s Day is about drunkenness for most people, like this shaggy-haired gentleman who thought a naked streaking was necessary at a hockey game. Unfortunately, he’s not a very good skater, which I imagine is awfully painful before he tries to go top-shelf on the goalie. I’m still surprised the ref doesn’t do more to stop him when he gets on the ice in the first place. His stick-handling abilities are also sub-par, but I give him high marks for his ability to decently mime a shot

I’d love to see something like this happen at a pro game just to see the guy get a brutal cross-check from some burly defense man.

Sean Avery Gets Ragdolled

Sean Avery inspires people to be angry with him. Something about his personality just gets people’s blood boiling, like David Clarkson who tries to get Avery to thrown down and fight him. In a rare moment of restraint, Avery refuses and for his pacifism he gets tossed to the ice multiple times, in front of the refs who make no move to stop it. I guess the refs are big Elisha Cuthbert fans…

That’s Some Nice Stick Work

Marty Turco of the Dallas Stars is a pretty good goalie but this shootout attempt from Anze Kopitar from the Los Angeles Kings is simply too much for him to handle.

The Hockey Star and The Hot Hockey Daughter

alyonka-larionovOne of the best young players in the NHL, Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins knows his way around the ice, but when it comes to the kitchen, not so much. Here he is with Hall-of-Famer Igor Larionov’s daughter, Alyonka making pirogies for the Penguins website. You don’t usually see this much sexual tension in an internet video that doesn’t end up on youporn.

Alyonka, who was briefly on American Idol, also previously dated Alexander Ovechkin, who of course has a little feud going with Malkin’s teammate Sidney Crosby. Clearly Alex the Great doesn’t mind others going for HIS sloppy seconds.

This video is full of awkward and fun moments as the two share the kitchen, the tension is thick and thanks to Puck Daddy, here are some fun screencaps, unedited to provide a completely different version of the video.

Nothing Says “Thank You” Like Pizza Hut

Pittsburgh Penguins players Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal, Max Talbot, Kris Letang, Tyler Kennedy and Pascal Dupuis dropped by the construction site of their future home, the Consol Energy Center, to check on the progress and deliver a special thank you to the construction workers.

“We think it’s a great gesture for our players to say thank you in this small way to the men and women who are building the new Consol Energy Center,” said team president David Morehouse. “These workers have done a great job — especially during the cold weather of the winter months — and this is a token of appreciation from the team.”

That special token? Pizza Hut pizzas! Way to go all out there guys, why not slow it down a little, you don’t want to overwhelm the workers with such an outpouring of emotion. Maybe start small, give each of the workers a koosh ball or something…

Play With Sharks and You’ll Get Bit

sharkhousefullDesperate to show everyone how big of a San Jose Sharks fan you are? Well, Winges Architects and Hooper Construction & Remodeling have made the perfect structure for you, a giant play-house complete with a “ice-rink” playing surface on the ground-floor and locker room on the second floor.

The special building will be raffled off in a benefit for Rebuilding Together Peninsula, an organization that rehabilitates homes and community facilities for low-income homeowners and neighbors.

Other awesome features of this play-house include a mock Zamboni control panel, real Sharks team souvenirs, climbing apparatus, and of course, a kick-ass fiberglass shark head with dorsal fin and tail sure to scare the crap out of your neighbors.

This would go awesome on my lawn, if only I had one. Or if I was a Sharks fan…

Raffle tickets are only $10, so readers out in the San Jose area, get to work winning this for me.
