Wonder What’s On His Mind

The Chicago White Sox sometimes go by the moniker of The Pale Hose, but I was unfamiliar with this nickname for the team…

I’m Guessing He Said Something Untoward

I never played lacrosse because that’s the same time as the tennis season, and later, the same as my high school musicals, so I never put on the pads and had a go. I’m still tough though, like the other day, I got a paper cut and I only cried for like 10 minutes. So there!

Anyways, this video is pretty hilarious, this kid gets KNOCKED OUT and it’s pretty awesome. Mostly because it isn’t me.

Zamboni Driving 101

ph2009040904165Watching the Zamboni make its way around the ice, many a fan has dreamed of driving the beautiful contraption. At the Herbert Wells ice rink in College Park, Maryland you can have just that opportunity. Several times a year, for a $90 fee, ($75 if you sign up in advance) you can take a two-night Zamboni training course. There they will teach you the basics of blade changing, tank filling, scraping patterns and the all important vehicle storage. Of course, most people are there just to ride around on the big lumbering machine.

“People are just fascinated by them,” said Russell Barrett, the rink’s head Zamboni wrangler and the night’s instructor. “They line up to watch as we do cuts,” the professional term for the Zam’s periodic solo performances between hockey periods and breaks in the all-skate. “The kids wave. It makes some of the guys nervous to operate it with all the people watching.”

According to Barrett, the most eager participants are young men and dads, although occasionally a woman will come to take the class too. Slow moving machine plus maintaining an ice surface and moving in circles? Sign me up!

OK, That’s Pretty Awesome

Certainly not as cool as Nicklas Lindberg’s shootout goal, here is Mike Ribeiro from the Dallas Stars making Coloardo Avalanche goalie Peter Budaj look silly as he skates in backwards and then flicks the puck into the net. You know, when the NHL made the move to shootouts I wasn’t sure I was into it, but damn if it don’t allow some pretty sweet moves for the players to show off.

Kidd’s Lady Friend Makes Me Want to Drive to the Hole

It’s got to be nice to be a big-time NBA player like Jason Kidd, you can divorce your wife and then, a year later be dating super hot models. That is NEVER how it goes down for me.

Anyways, here is Hope Dworaczyk, Kidd’s current girlfriend who also was Miss April in Playboy this year. She must really like him because as part of the shoot she wore a body-painted version of his uniform, there’s no word if Mark Cuban is changing the uniforms of the cheerleaders, but I for one think this would be a great idea.

After the jump are lots more from the shoot, and her totally NSFW full pictorial, you know, if you’re into that kind of thing. Enjoy!

The Prettiest Goal You’ll Ever See

They must spend plenty of extra time working on penalty shots in Sweden; we already saw Linus Omark take it to the house with a super pretty goal but this video tops it. Here is Nicklas Lindberg from the Port Huron Icehawks just flat out baffling Kalamazoo goalie Joel Martin during a shootout. This is one of the nicest hockey goals I have ever seen, and I doubt you’ll see anything else this good, probably ever.

Nothing But Net

There are few things more enjoyable in life than youth sports. You put a mustache on, bring a six-pack and a notepad so you can make a sports-book and BAM you got a fun Saturday. I’d have lost big bucks on this game, but, when you can see a shot like this, it’s almost all worth it.

Pretty awesome for 7th and 8th graders, although, someone should tell those kids that it all gets worse from here.

Major League Turns 20

fd9qayofI was remiss in not paying attention to this yesterday, and for that, I truly apologize.

20 years ago yesterday, my favorite baseball movie, and where I learned most of my swears, Major League was released. Since then Ricky Vaughn, Willie Mays Hays and Pedro Cerrano have battled gamely every day, and it is impossible to flip past it on TV and not stop. I can recite every line in this movie, it makes me the happiest. I for one think Bull Durham is overrated and that Major League is by far the best baseball movie out there.

My only question, does Lou know that Jake is going to call his shot, is that part of the signs that Jake signals to him before his at-bat? Because if teams have a sign for calling ones shot, I’d find that ridiculous.

I Like Something Mets-Related!

I get accused sometimes of being anti-Mets, I’m not, I just think they have an awful GM, don’t care about their fans and have choked, viciously, the last two years. That’s not unfair right? However, I don’t give them enough props on the one thing they do better than anyone else in baseball; unique handshakes. Usually Jose Reyes has several and that’s the majority of the fun, but here is Mets ace Johan Santana making his way through the dugout, doing a special handshake with everyone. I’m impressed he remembers them all. The one with Alex Cora and taking off the hat is the best by the way.

I Think the Fight Was Supposed to Go Longer

If I had to pick an awesome martial arts form to be a master of, I would choose Capoeira because A) it’s bad-ass and B) I really liked the movie “Only the Strong.” Here is Marcus “Lelo” Aurelio of AXE Capoeira Vancouver taking on Keegan ” The Marshall” Marshall in Vancouver on April 4th and knocking him the fuck out. Awesome

Anna Kournikova Tries a Triathlon

Since retiring from tennis full-time, Anna Kournikova has found other ways to keep busy; for instance competing in the Second Annual Nautica South Beach Triathlon, which helps to raise money for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Isn’t that nice! Also, she wears spandex to do it. Isn’t that even nicer!

Let’s Hear it for the Dogs!

1326432274_c301e0e16bOpening Day yesterday is probably something of a holiday for the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council — a group whose BBQs you DEFINITELY want an invite to — after all, according to a statement they released, the NHDaSC predicts that 21,733,839 hot dogs will be sold at stadiums this season. That’s a whole lot of delicious pig anus!

Since everyone loves silly comparisons, the Council also explains that that many hot dogs would go around the bases 30,186 times and stretch to and from Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia and Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, FL, the two sites of the 2008 World Series.

Individually, the Fenway Frank is expected to be the best-selling and most popular dog in the land, with more than 1.5 million expected to be sold.

“There’s no question that hot dogs hit a grand slam year after year,” said Tom Super, spokesman for the Council. “The connection and nostalgia between hot dogs and baseball has been around for over a century. After all, hot dogs were Babe Ruth’s performance enhancing drug of choice.”

Buried in this press release were three other surprising items:

  1. They serve Rocky Mountain Oysters (fried bull testicles) at Coors Field in Denver
  2. The Phillie Phanatic has a specially made Hatfield Hot Dog Launcher that he uses to toss hot dogs into the stands.
  3. The Council is trying to amend “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” to include hot dogs in the lyrics.
