Seau Takes a Sack

seaufanDuring the fourth quarter of yesterday’s dismantling of the Arizona Cardinals, Junior Seau received a very unexpected hit. A male fan, presumably inebriated, jumped out of the stands and tackled Seau, bringing him to the ground. This took Seau completely unawares. “It was definitely a shock,” he said. “It was probably one of my most memorable moments in my 19-year career. I thought [at first] it was one of my [teammates] that was enjoying the win. As I was laying on the ground I saw this guy in street clothes. Obviously, it was not one of the players or any of the employees of the Patriots. Therefore, security came over and took care of him. I wish him a Merry Christmas.”

Not enough people jump on the field for football games, I think it has something to do with incredibly large men in full pads who won’t think twice about pummeling you. Baseball streakers are likely to get tackled by security but rarely do the players get involved, they’re too scared of damaging their precious money-makers, but football players, they’ll knock you the fuck out.

Football Finally Comes to Israel

Because the Israeli baseball league did so well, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft has invested money into the Israeli Football League, which will be renamed the Kraft Family IFL, sounds catchy. The teams will play many of their games at Kraft Stadium, a football stadium Kraft had built several years ago to help promote the sport. So far, the game hasn’t taken off too well. I guess it’s hard to get excited about someone throwing a deep bomb when there are actual bombs going off…I wonder if they call a Hail Mary pass a shema pass instead…and how in the world do players celebrate touchdowns if Jesus wasn’t there to get them into the endzone?

Man, I’m on FIRE! Anyways…

“I get a special feeling in my heart every time I hear Hatikva (Israel’s national anthem) sung on a football field, and hope to help this sport grow in this country,” Kraft said during a visit last year to Israel where he took in an IFL game.

A statement released by league commissioner Ben Friedman had this to say:

The Kraft family involvement will ensure a banner year for both the IFL and American Football in Israel at-large, and we’re excited to kick off our upcoming season with such a significant milestone,” IFL Commissioner Ben Friedman said in a statement Tuesday.

My New Quarterback

I’ve been avoiding all things Brady because frankly it makes me want to throw up, but I’m trying to control myself. What was supposed to be another awesome football season is now up in the air. That too can be exciting but until they play again all I’m left with is a bitter, acrid taste in my mouth. Unlike baseball I don’t have as much interest in the larger league beyond the Patriots. I watch whatever game that’s on but I don’t have much if any of a rooting interest except how it relates to the Pats. Living in NYC, this season is going to be that much harder to bear. Sigh. Get well soon Tom. Nonetheless, here’s hoping Matt Cassel, who hasn’t started a game since high school is going to kick ass. In 2001 I remember when Bledsoe went down and it felt like the season was over, so who knows, this too could be an amazing season. I certainly hope so. Anyway, this video is from a charity event held by special teams ace Larry Izzo called Larry-oke and clearly Cassel is a wee bit tipsy in this clip. Let’s go Pats!

Tom Brady Has Flaws!

Yesterday’s afternoon practice for the Patriots was missing a key component of the franchise’s past and future success, one Thomas Edward Brady. It seems Brady left early so he and my future girlfriend Gisele could head over to Garden to take in a Coldplay concert. Brady is a big fan of the band, he has an Itunes playlist for example that starts off with Coldplay’s “Speed of Sound” and the feeling is mutual as, for their final song of the evening they dedicated their song to him. “I don’t want to do this really because it’s cheesy . . . but we’re great fans of his and he’s probably left the building anyway,” said Chris Martin, “We’d like to dedicate this to Tom Brady – your quarterback. We’re big fans of his and very honored he came to the show, and I hope to goodness it was worth it.” Martin then went on to mess up the lyrics to his own song, so that’s something.

Now, I love Tom Brady, he’s a football god and as a person he seems pretty down to earth and awesome as well, but c’mon, Coldplay!?! Couldn’t you like a group just slightly cooler? Or is this just me, and everyone else in the world thinks Coldplay is awesome? However, if Tom has any non-ironic Gloria Estefan songs on his Ipod it might be all over between us. I just always thought of Brady as a man’s man but when he says things like how he can be caught “patiently waiting for every album. Each has been better than the last,” I find myself wanting to find a new QB, I’m gonna cut him some slack for now and assume that he just went because Gisele wanted to. But you’re on thin ice Tom!

I Hope They All Watch “Bring it On”

So as the Olympics come closer, more stories about the preparations and extreme steps the Chinese are taking to make the games go off well and have the media report good things about China. To that end, the Chinese have created the largest cheerleading squad ever, over 200,000 people! The cheerleaders are comprised of people from all walks of life, from students to retired civil servants–who I’m sure have by far the best moves–and will learn some simple dance steps and have nosiemaking thunderstix to excite the crowds.

From the 200,000 there will also be an elite group of 400 who will server as cheerleaders, dancers and acrobats. To help get these teams ready since China has no history of cheerleaders, the games organizers arranged for the teams to get training from the New England Patriots cheerleaders.

The girls have been training for 4-6 hour days and are gearing up for the games.

“‘Everyone knows cheerleading is a Western activity, but we hope we can find a Chinese way to do it [and] show the world,” says He He, who sports long, dyed-red hair and a sparkly belly-button ring.”

Let the games begin!

The Slanch Report has started an online petition asking the MLB Network to air the Dock Ellis no-hitter he threw on June 12, 1970 against the San Diego Padres. The moment was a seminal piece of baseball history and is certainly worthy of being rerun.

Please join us in this cause and sign the petition below so we can all share in this special and fantastic moment of baseball history. THANKS!
