Smoking Kills (2 Grandmasters’ Chances in Tournament)

We all know the allure of smoking cigarettes, they make you look cooler, older, tougher, more popular, etc, but who knew that there are BAD things to them too! At the World Chess Cup in sunny Khanty Mansiysk, Russia, two Chinese grandmasters Wang Yue (left) and Li Chao, were disqualified from their third-round matches after showing up late. Their excuse? They were out back smoking.

Wang told an interviewer later that he understood the tournament’s decision but didn’t think it was particularly fair. The biggest victim of all was Li who only started smoking in order to keep Wang company during the tournament, which should be a lesson to all you potential smokers out there; if you’re going to start smoking make sure it’s for a good reason, like impressing cute older girls.

When he was asked if this incident would push Wang to quit smoking he had this response: “I don’t think so. After such a shock, you only think to take a long smoke.” Grandmaster indeed.

Fat, Drunk and Asleep is No Way to Get Through a Chess Tournament Son

drunkchessPlaying chess isn’t a very physically taxing activity, but at the highest levels apparently you need to have all your faculties with you if you’re going to play. Grandmaster Vladislav Tkachiev learned that lesson the hard way when he showed up to an international tournament in Kolkata, India.

After just 15 moves he lost his round on technical grounds when he fell asleep drunk in the middle of the game. Playing India’s Praveen Kumar the highly inebriated  Tkachiev couldn’t sit still and then, like your uncle at Thanksgiving, passed out with his head on the table.

Ranked 58 in the world, despite tournament organizers’ best efforts, Tkachiev wouldn’t wake up.

Because it’s chess, he lost the match for being unable to finish within the time limit. However, while he was warned and slapped on the wrist, he was allowed to participate in the rest of the tournament.

Grandmaster Takes on All Comers

georgiev02Bulgarian Grand Master Kiril Georgiev broke the world record for the largest number of simultaneous chess matches on Monday when he played 360 games at one time. The marathon process took 14 hours and 8 minutes with Georgiev playing against opponents ranging from children to retired old people.

His final record at the end of the challenge, 284 wins, 70 draws and only 6 losses. The record has now been submitted to the Guinness Book of Records for certification.

Pretty impressive I suppose, although those 6 losses are a bit embarrassing, after all, he IS a GRANDMASTER and then he gets beat by little Billy from some nearby elementary school?
