The Orioles Fail at Spelling

orioles-twitter-typo-oriloes

There must be something in the water in the Washington DC/Baltimore area; first there was the disaster when the Nationals went out to play in uniforms with their name misspelled, and now the Orioles suffer from a similar error. The team’s Twitter feed may not be of the utmost importance to the front-office, but it’s pretty embarrassing to have your team name in large font prominently displayed on the screen as “Oriloes.”

Since this first got reported, the Orioles have subsequently fixed their error but that it happened in the first place is simply awful. Hey, guess what, I’m a GREAT speller, hint hint MLB teams…

Baltimore is Getting Things Done

Baltimore Orioles fans haven’t had much to cheer about since, oh, 1996 or so, but if city councilman James Kraft gets his way the beginning of the games may feature a little extra spirit. That’s because he’s trying to repeal a city ordinance passed in 1916 wherein “The Star Spangled Banner” cannot be sung with any embellishments or altering. Anyone who violates this ordinance could face a $100 fine. It seems that Orioles fans want to have the option of being able to add their lusty “O” yell during the anthem. Considering that the anthem is probably the only moment for Orioles fans to cheer during the entire game, I am fully in favor of this measure.

Among the other outdated ordinances that Kraft is trying to eradicate is a measure passed in 1946 which makes it illegal to sell condoms to anyone under 16.

While I’m glad to see these idiotic ordinances removed from city law, I have to wonder if these are the most important issues in Baltimore these days. Based on my rabid viewing of The Wire, I would say no. According to that show there is a drug problem in Baltimore. Maybe the city council can pay attention to that sometime soon. I mean, I get that these issues are much MUCH more pressing but, you know, if there’s time…

Manny Ramirez: Simply the Best!

Manny Ramirez is an athlete. Blessed with incredible instincts as a hitter, he can hit any pitch anywhere. His fielding is generally somewhat underrated. Sure, he sometimes makes absolutely boneheaded plays or takes crazy routes to balls occasionally, but he routinely will get a number of outfield assists because he has a strong accurate arm. Manny also has makes some great catches in the field because of his natural athleticism, which also leads to some mistakes, sure, but he can make some spectacular catches. For example, yesterday against the Orioles Manny went back made a great running catch near the wall, then climbed up half the wall to slow himself and at the top of his climb gave a high-5 to a Boston fan who was sitting there. Awesome. Then he got the ball in and doubled the man off first ending the inning. Awesome!

Check it out.

I love you Manuelito.

h/t to Boston Dirt Dogs for the kickass picture.
