London Hot Olympian of the Morning: Sri Lanka’s Christine Sonali Merrill

christine-sonali-merrillTo honor the London Games and the athletes participating in them, The Slanch Report will be bringing you THRICE DAILY a Hot Olympian of the Day. Each day we will bring you three (likely unknown-to-you) Olympians who, while maybe not quite worthy of a place on the medal stand, certainly are worth being placed on a pedestal for us to enjoy. Celebrate them all on the Hot Olympians page.

Christine Sonali Merrill is one of the seven athletes competing for Sri Lanka in the London games. Born in Bakersfield, California, Merrill came to the attention of the Sri Lankan sports authorities after they read an article about her in the Daily Mirror. Impressed by her successes at the University of California-San Diego, and because her grandfather is Sri Lankan, they reached out to her to see about her performing worldwide as a member of the Sri Lankan delegation, participating in the Asian Athletic Championships in 2011 where she won thebronze.

Major General Palitha Fernando, the President of the athletics Association of Sri Lanka, also admitted that after reading the article, and seeing a photo of Merrill, he was intrigued by her potential.

And why not! In addition to being world-class in the 400M hurdles, Merrill graduated UCSD with a degree in mechanical engineering. Brains AND beauty, just like me!
