London Hot Olympian of the Evening: Poland’s Sylwia Gruchała

sylwia-gruchalaTo honor the London Games and the athletes participating in them, The Slanch Report will be bringing you THRICE DAILY a Hot Olympian of the Day. Each day we will bring you three (likely unknown-to-you) Olympians who, while maybe not quite worthy of a place on the medal stand, certainly are worth being placed on a pedestal for us to enjoy. Celebrate them all on the Hot Olympians page.

A four-time Olympian, Polish fencer Sylwia Gruchała, 30, won bronze in Athens in the foil but unfortunately, as happened in Beijing, she won’t follow up her individual success in London, getting knocked out in the round of 16. However, she is and her Polish squad are still alive in the team foil event, for which they earned the silver medal in Sydney. Gruchała is expected to retire from fencing following the London games.

When she’s not at the Olympics, Gruchała is a soldier in the Polish army and in 2008 appeared on the Polish version of Dancing With the Stars; something she laments in some ways, frustrated that she is more well known for that than her medal-winning fencing abilities. Then again, when you’re as stunningly beautiful as she is, no matter how skilled you are with a sword that’s always going to be second-place.
