Being the youngest child I firmly understand, and appreciate, starting trouble with the older, more established people around you. The Portland Timbers, MLS' newest franchise aren't set to start playing in the league until next season but they are already looking to mess with their Pacific Northwest neighbors, the Seattle Sounders.

To that end, the Timbers purchased some billboard space in downtown Seattle, specifically next to Qwest Field where the Sounders home games are played. Reading "Portland, Oregon: Soccer City USA" the billboard serves to help stoke the rivalry fire that MLS can sorely use.

Ah hubris! I love it! Considering how little attention is paid to MLS nationwide, I think the Timbers' advertising strategy of both appealing to the Washington audience which has generously supported the Sounders attendance-wise so far and of antagonizing the (somewhat) more established franchise is GENIUS.

Keep poking at the bigger boys Timbers, you'll only endear yourself more to me.

Go TIMBERS!
