Starting in May, all public areas in Michigan will be going officially smoke-free, one place considered a public area is Detroit's Comerica Park, where the Tigers ply their trade, helmed by Mr. Smokestack himself, Jim Leyland. Considering Leyland has said in the past, "Sometimes smoking can be fantastic," you'd imagine he'd be less than psyched by this news.
"Is it banned all over?" Leyland asked during a recent radio interview when informed about the change. "… then I’ve got a problem," he laughed. "Houston, we’ve got a problem.”
For the record, Houston's Minute Maid Park DOES allow smoking but only in designated areas.
While Leyland said he would abide by the law, he also added, "I’m not saying that I won’t cheat once in awhile,” he said. "I’m not going to lie."
At the same time, it's HIS stadium, I don't think that's going to stop him. After all, there are plenty of stories about him smoking in various stadiums throughout the league, regardless of their rulings. There's a big difference between being some nicotine-addicted fan, and the manager of a baseball team.
Besides, Leyland might go insane without nicotine and start pitching Adam Everett or something.
